Focus for the Month March 2015
Uniform: Why is uniform important? • If you take care and pride in your own appearance it puts you in the right frame of mind for school • If people see you smart it raises their expectations and estimation of you • It gives the school a community identity, it identifies you as part of this community, in school and outside school • It removes an unneeded pressure about what to choose to wear to school; the standards are the same for everyone
Uniform : basics • Blazers – to be worn at all times in the building and on the way to and from school • Shirts – to be white and tucked in • Ties – to be worn at all times in the building and on the way to and from school, up to the collar and showing at least three stripes • Shoes – to be black or dark brown, boots, fashion shoes and trainers are not allowed • Pullovers – these are optional but girls can wear v- necked bottle green pullovers with the blazer ( or cardigans in Key Stage 4) and boys can wear v- necked grey pullovers with the blazer (or black v- necked pullovers in Key Stage 4)
Focus 1:shoes • Trainers are the major problem at the moment • There is guidance on the school web site explaining why trainers are not suitable for school • Shoes that are not acceptable in school can be identified by the following features • Any shoe made out of canvas or other non polishable materials (Vans are a current popular make) • Any shoe that has additional logos, flashes, decorations or stripes (Adidas and Nike are popular manufacturers that do this) • Any shoe that comes above the ankle is usually a boot • If your current shoes fall into one of these categories and you do not have an alternative you must ensure that your next set of shoes does comply and your parents will be informed
Focus 2: shirts, skirts and ties, pullovers The guidelines here are very simple: • Shirts must be tucked in – check regularly • Skirts must not be rolled up at the waist, they must not be too short • Ties must be up to the collar and long enough to show three stripes • Pullovers must be v-necked (to show the tie) and be worn with the blazer not instead of
Focus 3: additions The guidelines here are also very simple, the school uniform does not require any other decorations: • Facial piercings are not allowed • Hairstyles should not be extreme in either cut or colour • Jewellery (other than a watch) is not allowed • Nail varnish, false nails or make up is not allowed
Conclusion During March the focus will be for every student • in Year 7-11 to have the right uniform and to wear it correctly. Staff in registration ,in lessons and on duty will • be challenging students to meet these standards and rewarding those who do and supporting those students who need to try harder. There will be spot checks so at the end of the • month we can see through the merits table who has met the challenge and identify any students who need to have their uniform monitored through the Summer term.
