In the beginning…  Common Core State Standards  Developed by:  State Governors  National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA)  State Education Commissioners  Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO)  With input from teachers, parents, administrators, etc.  Designed to ensure equity amongst educational standards from state to state  Initially adopted in July 2010  Adopted by 48 states; now 43

FDOE Responded to Public Concern  Fall 2013: Florida Department of Education (FDOE) opened three channels for public input  3 public meetings for public input  Website posted with information about:  the new standards  links to the proposed standards  transcripts of the public meetings  other resources.  form for public input  Email address created public comment

Result  January 2014: FDOE recommended changes to Common Core State Standards  February 2014: Revised standards approved by Florida State Board of Education  Mathematics Florida Standards (MAFS)  Language Arts Florida Standards (LAFS)  2014-2015: Full implementation K-12 of MAFS and LAFS

What’s Different? Elementary ELA  Kindergarten standards now have “with prompting and support”  Handwriting: Legible print, then cursive  To provide clarification and additional examples within the standards (of abstract nouns, ex.) ORIGINAL CCSS REVISED LAFS
