  5. T HE C ANDLEMAS This feast of the presentation of the Lord we also call Candlemas. As we commemorate Jesus presented in the temple by the ever-faithful Mary and Joseph, we recall the incarnation, the Christ- mas mystery and the bestowal of light to humankind. It has long been our Catholic custom to bless candles on this day, both candles for our own homes and especially those we will use throughout the liturgical year. What we remember, what we do, and what we hope to see is laid out and cele- brated in the prayer of the blessing of the candles that began our liturgy today. PASTOR’S NOTES Today is also a special day for me, a day of beautiful memories. Ever since I was a child, mom used to wake me up, early on this day, to go to church and thank God for the gift of life. We pro- cessed with candles, participated in the Eucharist, and gave thanks to God. That was the beginning of my Birthday since I was little. Then, we went home and had breakfast. Our birthdays were the only days on which we could have two eggs for breakfast! We have addressed God, the “source and origin of all light, who on this day showed to the just man Simeon the light of revelation to the Gentiles,” asking that the candles which we are eager to carry in praise of your name may light our way as we tread the path of virtue, seeking to reach the light that never fails. May our hearing of the gospel and the Eucharist make us ready to pray with Simeon, “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word.” · No envelope provided in monthly “mailed to · supplied in monthly “mailed to home” packet home” packet · Previously labeled “Ghana” · Envelopes are not needed for this collection. · Used for (Parish-wide) charitable contribution However (1) you may use an envelope that is to designated charity provided in the pews or (2) you may use your · Placed in normal weekend collection (not a own envelope and write on the envelope “O&M.” Second/Special collection) · Placed in Second/Special collection on O&M · Green envelope is NOT used for O&M collec- weekends (2/9, 5/3, 6/14, 7/12, 8/2, 8/30, 10/14, tions 11/11) · Monies will be used to offset the rising cost of maintaining our aging buildings and to continue with preventative maintenance The “Green Envelope” Parish-wide charitable contribution entity has not yet been identified. If you could offer some suggestions as to where these donations could be used most appropriately, it would be greatly appreciated! Please send your suggestions to David Quinn, who will compile a list for our Parish Finance Committee to review and select. Hopefully, this process will be completed by February. Once completed, designated sponsorship and our final payment to the Ghana mission will be announced.
