FArm equipment Planting and Harvesting Wheat Farm to Table Unit
Prep Work Each Spring, most farmers till their fields. Tilling is the action of digging into the ground and breaking up the soil into small chunks. When soil is broken up, water and food can easily reach the seeds that farmers will plant. Farmers need a powerful tractor to pull the till.
Planting Now that the soil is tilled, it’s time for farmers to plant their wheat and/or other crops. They use a machine called a planter or a drill to do this. Farmers can plant many rows of seeds at one time. They also put fertilizer with their seeds to help it grow nice and tall. Click on the picture to see how farmers fill the drill.
Spraying Farmers use a sprayer to spray chemical onto the field to protect their crops from bugs and weeds. Some bugs like to eat healthy plants. Weeds, which are a type of plant, steal food and water from the soil. Harvest The crops grow all summer long. In the late summer/fall it is time to harvest the crop! Farmers use a combine to separate the grain from the plant. They empty the wheat from the combine into a truck. When the truck is full of grain they store the grain in grain bins or silos.
