Farm to School A Missouri Farmers Perspective
To make this movement successful we must understand the many factors of food production
Real Farmers, Growing Real Food
So Many Opportunities! • Schools can “ pick their food ” . • Field Trips • A great way to sell produce that you wouldn ’ t have a market for. • Expanding partnerships, creating business opportunities.
It ’ s ALL Sunshine….and unicorns… or not… • Difficult for farmers to have constant communication. Producers are farmers, marketers, book keepers, HR departments, food safety specialists and everything in between. • Finding a middle ground of pricing. Schools are used to working with commodity dollars. • Schools want a reliable consistent supply of product. Mother Nature doesn ’ t always allow for that. • Local is cool but for how long? • Farming is a business. Not a uptopia.
We must create the next generation of agriculturalists!
