INTRODUCTION I am so excited about iLEAD in Northwest Ohio. As a 13 year teacher veteran in a traditional school setting, I am honored that they chose me to be part of the start up team here in Holland and I’m looking forward to a wonderful year of authentic student centered learning. I will be getting married on November 19 th to the man pictured here; Jeff. These are our fur babies. Bella is a chocolate Lab who enjoys lounging on the back porch bench as well as retrieving ducks during hunting season. Mela is a Chihuahua Pomeranian mix who may like pumpkin spice as much as I do.

MORNING MEETING Morning meeting allows us to begin each day as a community of caring and respectful learners. Morning meeting follows the following format: 1. Greeting: Students greet each other by name, often including handshaking, singing, movement, and other activities. 2. Sharing: students share some news or information about themselves and respond to each other, articulating their thoughts, feelings, and ideas in a positive way. 3. Group Activity: The whole class does a short, inclusive activity together, reinforcing learning and building class cohesion through active participation. 4. Morning Message: Students practice academic skills and warm up for the day ahead by reading and discussing a daily note to the class posted by their teacher.

DAILY 5 The daily 5 is a set of literacy tasks which students complete daily while the teacher meets with small groups or confers with individuals. COMMUNICATION Email is the best way to communicate with me. I can easily check it during the day and respond as quickly as possible. If you have an urgent request or need to speak with me other than email, you can always call Lorri up front. She is able to walk the phone back to me. I am also sending out a weekly email update called ZLU (zesty learner update) . This weekly email will contain academic updates as well as upcoming events and other notes of interest pertaining to social/emotional skills, Character Lab, and Leader in Me. Be sure to check your email on the weekends. If for some reason you are not able to receive email or would like a hard copy of ZLU, see me before you leave tonight. Always feel free to contact me with questions or concerns you may have.
ILP’S Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) personalize goals and instruction for each child. We believe that learning should be interest-driven, peer-supported and focused on powerful outcomes. During the ILP meeting, the learner will be asked to reflect on what they understand their strengths and challenges to be. He or she will be able to share their interests and any other passions they may have. Parents/guardians will get to add input, and the facilitator will share their observations and data from the assessments. Then, using what we know about strengths, challenges, interests, and data, the team will come up with an academic and social- emotional goal for each learner. It is vital that the learner takes ownership of the goal, and the goals are not being enforced upon him. For each goal created, the team will create action plans for home and at school to help support the progress toward each goal.
