  1. COASTAL WASTE MANAGEMENT IN VIETNAM: Experience and sharing from MCD HOANG ANH Centre for Marinelife Conservation and Community Development (MCD) San Diego, California, USA – March, 2018

  2. Presentation Outline  Vietnam Coastal Waste situation  Ongoing efforts by MCD  Things for discussion www.mcdvietnam.org

  3. Vietnam coastal areas: development pressure • 3,260km of coastal line Vietnam square: over 300,000km2 • 50% Vietnamese population Vietnam population: about 96 million (early 2018) • 28 coastal provinces/63 provinces Most have river mouths to the sea • 15 economic zones are in the coastal areas • Many development sectors are in the coastal areas www.mcdvietnam.org

  4. Vietnam coastal areas: development pressure Population Urbanization Agriculture growth Mining Forestry Waste pressure is generated by Shipping development sectors Tourism Aquaculture Industry Power development www.mcdvietnam.org

  5. Vietnam marine waste In 2015 waste generation: Vietnam: 27.3 million tons/year Coastal areas: 14.03 million of tons/year ~ 60% of the country Waste collection: Urban: 85.3% Rural: 40-55% Uncollected trash  marine trash Vietnamese policy: • Not yet focus on plastic waste • not yet have strategy or plan for coastal waste management www.mcdvietnam.org

  6. So why MCD? Centre for Marinelife Conservation and Community Development 3 + 15 (MCD) was established as a Vietnamese non-governmental non-profit organization in 2003 years under the Vietnam Association of Marine Science and Technology Inherited experience from the US based NGO called International Marinelife Alliance (IMA) in Vietnam. Vision MCD is a leading Vietnamese NGO in the field of coastal and marine ecosystem conservation , striving for a coastal zone of Vietnam with healthy ecosystems and a good quality of life for coastal communities, especially the most vulnerable. Mission MCD commits to promoting active cooperation between related stakeholders, implementing initiatives that integrate local knowledge and international experiences, in order to better manage coastal ecosystems and improve coastal communities’ living conditions , contributing to sustainable development of the coastal zone, especially in the climate change context 10/28 coastal provinces www.mcdvietnam.org

  8. MCD – ongoing efforts to address marine trash ICC - CCC In Vietnam, MCD - 1 st ICC – in year 2000 - as one of experience for waste management and effective environment management Approach: multi-stakeholders Lesson learnt: key trash in coastal area to local decision and further involvement Places: 11 coastal provinces (north to south of Vietnam) Activities : 35 ICC events and other side-events like waste sorting for boat owner, classes on ecosystem for children Participants: 13,000 people Vietnam National ICC Coordinator www.mcdvietnam.org

  12. Other ongoing efforts on marine trash management Reducing marine plastic pollution in red river delta, central coastal of Vietnam including Ha Long bay: • Increasing the innovation and effectiveness of local government, civil society and PPPs in reducing plastic pollution of the marine environment; • Raising community and public awareness to reduce plastic pollution of marine environments, using friendly- environmental materials… • Promoting reduce, reuse and recycle for plastics waste Promoting local technology of collecting trash in waterway Promoting social network in connecting to reduce marine trash initiatives Initiators of Vietnam Zero Waste Alliance www.mcdvietnam.org

  13. Ongoing efforts on marine trash management Trash collection initiatives Using friendly-environmental material Floating trash bin in fishing port Pilot localized automatic trash Replacing Styrofoam buoys trapper with oil refinery in the sea for aquaculture cages Promoting 3R practices Organic composting www.mcdvietnam.org Plastics waste separation Understanding the plastics recycle situation

  14. Things for discussion Raising community awareness, green living style: more efforts from stakeholders Promoting local innovative technique: in 3R, collection and waste solution also involvement from businesses or banks for effective localized innovative technique Enhancing collaboration : multi-stakeholder Piloting models: learning and sharing globally Improving policy: through piloting innovation/models www.mcdvietnam.org
