Main Bridge Contract Priorities for FY 2017 � Treatment of the Remediated Nitrate Salts � Chromium Interim Measures and Characterization Campaign � Transition to Follow-on Contract 2
Remediated Nitrate Salts � 60 Remediated Nitrate Salt (RNS) drums are stored at Area G � Fiscal Year 2016 Accomplishments � Extensive fire mitigation efforts were conducted around Area G � Pressure relief devices (PRDs) were installed on the RNS drums � A treatment plan for the RNS drums and 29 Un-remediated Nitrate Salt (UNS) Workers installed PRDs on the RNS drums drums was developed in the spring of 2016. � Fiscal Year 2017 Planned Activities � Treat the 60 RNS drums and 29 UNS drums � Treatment of the RNS drums is scheduled to start in spring of 2017 � Treatment of the UNS will follow the treatment of the RNS The treatment process for the RNS is 3 practiced and refined. 3
2016 Consent Order � 2016 Consent Order signed between DOE and NMED in June 2016 � The Consent Order governs environmental cleanup activities only � Consent Order lists enforceable milestones each year for the upcoming fiscal year, along with targets for the two fiscal years beyond that (Appendix B of the Consent Order) � Priorities, defined as campaigns, are listed in Appendix C of the Consent Order 4 4
Chromium Interim Measures and Characterization Campaign � Fiscal Year 2016 Accomplishments � Five out of six planned injection wells are installed and instrumented � Continued pumping from boundary extraction well CrEX-1 and installed CrEX-3 � First phase of piping installation completed � Lab testing of potential treatment technologies Workers use an angled drilling rig at the CrIN-4 site � Fiscal Year 2017 Planned Activities � Construct and operate plume control system � Pilot test of chemical in situ remediation The closed vault at injection well CrIN-5 5 5
RDX Characterization Campaign � Fiscal Year 2016 Accomplishments � Completed aquifer field testing in intermediate perched zone � Approved work plans for groundwater and surface restoration of permeable reactive barrier � Lab testing of biodegradation of RDX � Fiscal Year 2017 Planned Activities � Drill well R-68 to define extent of RDX plume � Complete removal of permeable reactive barrier � Complete report on aquifer and tracer testing 6 6
Historical Properties Completion Campaign � Fiscal Year 2016 Accomplishments � Contaminated soil was removed from four legacy sites along the south-facing slopes of Los Alamos Canyon adjacent to the Los Alamos Townsite � All but a few of the original 229 sites in Upper Los Alamos Canyon still require cleanup � Fiscal Year 2017 Planned Activities � Sampling and cleanup of the remaining sites in and adjacent to the Los Alamos Townsite � Initiate risk assessments and investigation reports Contaminated soil was placed in double-lined waste bags Workers prepare a sealed bag of contaminated soil for transportation 7 7
Technical Area 21 Campaign � Fiscal Year 2016 Accomplishments � Demolition of seven slabs and warehouse at Technical Area 21 � Additional waste and debris cleaned up and disposed off-site � Fiscal Year 2017 Planned Activities � Moisture monitoring and MDA-T � Additional opportunities to accelerate cleanup if sufficient funding is obtained: • TA-21 DP West to Building 257 D&D 8 8
Fiscal Year 18 Planned Activities � Environmental Cleanup � Cleanup activities will ensure compliance with Consent Order • Chromium Project • RDX • Technical Area 21 � Waste Management � Implement programmatic safety requirements � Plan waste retrieval 9
Moving Forward � The EM Los Alamos Field office will complete its activities in a safe and efficient manner and with full transparency Debris being cleared at the Los Alamos County Workers used heavy equipment to remove Airport landfill contaminated soil from Upper Los Alamos Canyon 10
