  18. OARS  OPEN QUESTIONS: Ahh…  AFFIRM: Clap  REFLECT: Snap  SUMMARIZE: Pat

  19. Closed Questions  Have a short answer (like yes/no) - Did you exercise this week?  Ask for facts - What is your address?  Ask if they know or can do something - Do you know how to get to the class?  They limit the client’s answer options

  20. Open-ended Questions  Open-ended questions encourage the client to give voice to their thoughts, feelings, experiences, opinions, values and motivations!

  21.  Do you smoke?  How is your back pain impacting your overall life?  Do you have any concerns about the stress in your life?  Isn’t it important for you to serve your children healthy food?  What would change in your life if you got off the streets?  Do you smoke marijuana or use other street drugs?  If you were to quit, how might that be a good thing?  Do you have any problems sleeping?  Have you ever thought about getting help for your depression?  You use again—you go to jail. Is that what you want?  What concerns—if any—do you have about your eating habits?  Before we get started, what questions do you have?  Does your back hurt while sitting?  How is your baby doing?  Have you had any contact with the victim?  Can you tell me more?

  23. Social Worker: I’m wondering, on a scale of 0-10, how important is it for you to graduate from high school. Jacky: About a 3. Social Worker: How come a 3? Jacky: I don’t know… I’m thinking about it, but probably won’t. I just want to hang out with Diane and rock on. Social Worker: You’d rather spend your time with Diane. Jacky: Yea, and feel free and hit the road like James Dean. Social Worker: So school makes you feel tied down, and you want to be on your own—a free bird. Jacky: Yea, but I know I should probably go. I just need to make up my own mind. Social Worker: Tell me more about some reasons why you think you should probably go back? Jacky : Well, it would help me graduate. Diane would like that. And I can keep playing football. Social Worker: What else? Jacky : Well, if I stay in school it might help get me a real job someday. Social Worker: So the main reasons are your future job prospects, keeps you playing football, and Diane really wants you to graduate. You know—if you’re interested--I have an idea about maybe getting the ball rolling for you starting school again. Would you like to hear it?

  24. Jacky: Alright. Social Worker: My idea is that you set up an appointment with the school counselor you’ve talked about before, Mr. Gomez—and talk with him about getting enrolled again for the fall semester . So, what do you think about that idea? Jacky: I guess I could do that. He’s alright. Social Worker: That’s a plan you can stand behind. Jacky : Yea. Social Worker: So what’s the first step in contacting Mr. Gomez. Jacky : Gotta get his phone number, and call him sometime soon, because I want to make sure I’m eligible for football. Social Worker: You have a plan. Jacky : Oh yea, life goes on… .
