Animal Production Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Research from a Country’s Perspective Country: Latvia Presenter: Kristine Sirma Ministry of Agriculture of Latvia Department of Agriculture Engaging Workshop, Warsaw Poland, 8-9 March 2014
Climate Research Uneven research development capacities and success between various sectors regarding climate change. Leaders - Energy sector and forest sector (climate change adaptation). Climate research activities in relation to Agriculture and Animal production is in a very initial stage. Low understanding of importance and potential still persists as well as insufficient capacity regarding research activities - lack of young and enthusiastic researchers in this field. Engaging Workshop, Warsaw Poland, 8-9 March 2014
Climate Project Finished INTERREG IVC European project – FUTURE forest (2009 - 2011) BERAS (Building Ecological Recycling Agriculture and Societies) implementation (2010 - 2013) Project “Responsible climate policy” (2011 - 2012) Baltic Manure (2011 - 2013) Ongoing “Reduced tillage soil management” University of Agriculture, State funding Program “National Climate Policy” EEA Financial Mechanism Engaging Workshop, Warsaw Poland, 8-9 March 2014
Climate Project Program “National Climate Policy” Main Partners – Ministry of Environment and Regional Development, Ministry of Agriculture, Norwegian Climate and Pollution Agency • Pre-defined Project 1 “Development of Proposal for National Adaptation Strategy” • Pre-defined Project 2 “Development of the National System for Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Reporting” Engaging Workshop, Warsaw Poland, 8-9 March 2014
Climate Project Pre-defined Project “ Development of the National System for Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Reporting” • Improvement of GHG inventory system in Latvia • Increasing capacity of the Latvian inventory experts Improved quality of ex-ante and ex-post evaluation of climate change policy measures • Project outcomes: Promoting sustainable land management through creation of a digital soil database Analysis of manure management actions Research of methane release from cattle enteric fermentation processes Forecasting of agricultural GHG emissions Carbon sequestration in croplands and grasslands Engaging Workshop, Warsaw Poland, 8-9 March 2014
Knowledge Important knowledge questions: Assessment of mitigation potential and selection of nationally appropriate mitigation and adaptation measures Developing of national emission factors and parameters according to IPCC 2006 (especially for manure management, cattle enteric fermentation, organic soils) Knowledg-based system on projection of agricultural indicators for emission projection estimation. Nationally appropriate models and methodologies Engaging Workshop, Warsaw Poland, 8-9 March 2014
Network Ongoing Networking Project “The Nordic – Baltic LULUCF Netw ork for Clim ate Friendly Land Use Measures” Project outcome Raise of the knowledge level of the National LULUCF experts (forest and agriculture) Expanded network of LULUCF forest and agri-experts, exchange of ideas about effective (cost/benefit balance) measures to reduce emissions from forests, croplands and grasslands Scientific work in order to assess national values required for greenhouse gas emissions/removals estimations and constant improvement of LULUCF reporting Pathway laying for future cooperation of experts from neighboring countries in finding similar solutions for similar problems Engaging Workshop, Warsaw Poland, 8-9 March 2014
Network Participating countries Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Norway, Lithuania, and Latvia Activities Next seminar Kaunas, Lithuania 11.05.-13.05.2014. Project website https://sites.google.com/site/lulucfnetwork/ Engaging Workshop, Warsaw Poland, 8-9 March 2014
