  1. Energy Management System As a PAT compliance tool for DCs Anupam Das Purkayastha RSM GC Advisory Services Pvt. Ltd. Presented in First Workshop on "Best Practices in Energy Efficiency in Textile Sector" under KEP initiative on 28th November, 2015 at Raymond Ltd., Thane ( Maharashtra )

  2. PAT and EnMS  3 years of operation – cycle 1 over  Realization – PAT is here to stay – energy regulation now comprehensive  Deepening and widening planned  new DCs ========================================================= Learnings from cycle 1 will help:  Existing DCs: ensure smooth cycle 2 of PAT  New DCs: avoid pitfalls faced by DCs in cycle 1 ========================================================= Establishing and deploying a proper Energy Management System will help successfully deal with some of the major challenges faced in PAT. 2 www.general-carbon.com

  3. About Us  Consulting and Advisory Services – Energy, Sustainability, Climate Change  Power Trading, REC trading  Renewable Energy – Feasibility, Implementation Guidance etc. =========================================================== PAT involvement  More than 3 years – Run up to PAT + Cycle 1  Consulting and advisory to DCs  Sectors  Power, Iron & Steel, Cement, Textile, Paper & Pulp ============================================================ 3 www.general-carbon.com

  4. Energy Management System (EnMS)  Management System for “Continual improvement in energy performance”  Applies to : “All variables that can affect energy performance – which can be monitored and influenced by the organization”  ISO50001  PDCA cycle 4 www.general-carbon.com

  5. EnMS – elements/requirements  Top Management  Management representative  Energy Policy  Energy management team (EMT) ============================================================  Legal and other requirements  Energy Review  Significant Energy Use  Improvement opportunities  Energy Baseline  Energy performance indicators (EnPIs)  Energy objectives, energy target, energy management action plan ============================================================ 5 www.general-carbon.com

  6. EnMS – elements/requirements  Competency, Training, Awareness Implementation  Communiction, Documentation (Records) and Operation  Operational Control – operation and regular maintenance (SOPs, WI etc.)  New/Modified/Renovated facilities equipment – EnPerf and Ops. Control  Procurement of energy, energy services – assess EnPerf, specs.for EnPerf ============================================================  Monitoring, measurment, analysis  Compliance evaluation Checking  Internal Audit of EnMS  Corrections, preventive actions ============================================================ 6 www.general-carbon.com

  7. EnMS – elements/requirements  Management Review ♦ Energy Performance ♦ Compliance Act ♦ Status on energy targets ♦ Corrections .... ♦ Recommendation for improvement ♦ Changes enhancement in resource allocation ============================================================ 7 www.general-carbon.com

  8. Some key challenges faced by DCs in PAT - how EnMS can help in facing these challenges …. 8 www.general-carbon.com

  9. Challenge #1 : Difference in Perspectives Regulator’s perspective DC’s perspective ♦ Energy ♦ If DC’s perspective is only “Energy data” !!!! in a very ♦ Economy limited sense - problematic ♦ Market ♦ Finance ♦ Legal EnMS can help bridge the gap  Energy Management Team (EMT): Representatives from all departments and functions - bring in their respective insights. Perspective broadens.  Top Management involvement : “Energy+” aspects are easily understood and hence addressed. 9 www.general-carbon.com

  10. Challenge #2: With regards to Energy Performance Data Major data items sought under PAT ♦ Energy source, use, consumption Challenges ♦ Significant energy equipment spec and  Not readily available performance ♦ Laboratory test data – eg.GCV  Multiple versions ♦ Production, Import and Export data  Inconsistent ♦ Breakdowns, major changes in energy consuming infrastructure  Not admissible Very Relevant EnMS can help face this challenge  Monitoring, Measurment and Analysis: Systems and procedures would logically include most if not all of above data.gaps, deviations would be reviewed and addressed routinely.  Legal and other requirements + Internal Audit: Would compel the system to address admissibility issues right from beginning.  Documentation requirements: Would ensure locatability and retrievability of records. 10 www.general-carbon.com

  11. Challenge#3: With regards to Energy Performance enhancing actions Major requirements under PAT Challenges  Ad-hoc actions ♦ Plan - Scheme submission ♦ Yearly measures undertaken  Timely preparation ♦ Correlating SEC reduction to /submission acttons taken  Ad-hoc or non-performance of ♦ Internal Field Audit (Quarterly) internal field audits EnMS can help face the challenge as it ensures concentrated and continual action  Objectives, targets, action plan: Requires preparation, regular maintenance and updating. This is the core which drives energy management action. ♦ Scheme  Snapshot of Objective, Target and Action Plan ♦ Internal field audit  Outcome of review of Objective, Target and Action Plan. 11 www.general-carbon.com

  12. Challenge #4: With regards to New Metrics required to be reported PAT energy reporting – new metrics Challenges ♦ Energy per unit weight, energy per  Conversions (weight   unit length, energy per unit area length) ♦ Sub-system metrics  Granularity of recorded metric Inherent in evolving regulation not as required under PAT EnMS processes if properly designed and executed can help face this challenge  EnPI: Proper methodology of determining and reviewing EnPI – can potentially envisage some of the new metrics.  Energy review: Proper energy review will encompass and focus on significant energy use sub-systems. Metric for sub-system level will be required to establish baseline. Shift to required granularity will be a logical system requirement – even without PAT directive. 12 www.general-carbon.com

  13. Challenge #5: With regards to Engagement with regulation formulation PAT – room for DC participation Challenges ♦ Consultative process in the run up to rules  Level of participation and seriousness formulation  Preparedness – energy insight into ♦ DC participation in technical committee operation ♦ Analytical input from DCs sought in the process of determining Normalization rule  Internal data and analytic support Etc. required for credible insight into energy performance. EnMS – when deployed properly will provide insight, information and data reqd. for effective engagement  Monitoring, Measurment and Analysis: Set up systems and processes for proper analysis of energy performance of process and machinery. Review of past deviations – root cause analysis, mitigation actions. 13 www.general-carbon.com

  14. Conclusion  A robust EnMS provides a framework for managing your energy performance.  As you look to secure or better your performance under PAT – consider establishing and deploying a robust EnMS. 14 www.general-carbon.com
