Kinetic and Potential Energy Potential Energy Potential energy is that energy which an object has because of its position. It is called potential energy because it has the potential to be converted into other forms of energy, such as kinetic

  1. Kinetic and Potential Energy

  2. Potential Energy Potential energy is that energy which an object has because of its position. It is called potential energy because it has the potential to be converted into other forms of energy, such as kinetic energy. Definition: Potential energy is energy that is stored in a system because of its position or chemistry.

  3. Some examples of potential elastic energy because of its position Softball pitcher springs can be winds up to wound up or pitch the ball. pushed down

  4. Think about it! The spring is wound up. What would happen if you pushed down on it or wind it up? What about the softball pitcher? Look at her arm. Where is it located? What will happen when her arm swings forward? spring with tension softball pitcher

  5. When the position of an object is altered or changed, it has potential elastic or gravitational energy. When you lift up a yo-yo, its position is changed. It now has the ability or potential to do work. It has potential gravitiational energy.

  6. Potential Energy Potential energy is also called stored energy.

  7. Some Examples of Potential Elastic & Gravitational Energy: Stretching a rubber band has elastic potential energy. Water atop a waterfall has gravitational potential energy. A yo–yo held in your hand has gravitational potential energy. Drawing a bow has elastic potential energy.

  8. A 3 rd form of Potential Energy is called Chemical energy. Examples of potential chemical energy are: • Wood • Coal • Oil • Gas

  9. You may be asking yourself, how is “chemical” transformed into energy? Look at that pile of wood below. If you were standing near it, you would get warm, right? How is this wood an example of potential energy?

  10. How is this wood an example of potential energy? Wood has stored chemical energy that is released when burned. Because wood is a compound, energy is needed to hold its molecules of different atoms together called a chemical bond. When the chemical bonds are broken through a chemical reaction, the energy used to hold them is released. This stored energy is potential energy!!

  11. Potential Energy Converted to Kinetic Energy… When stored energy begins to move, the object now transfers from potential energy into kinetic energy. Standing still Running

  12. Kinetic Energy Definition: Kinetic Energy is energy in motion or the energy of a moving object.

  13. Potential Energy Converted to Kinetic Energy… A good example is a person standing still. They need to transfer their potential energy (their ability to move) into kinetic energy. Standing still Running

  14. Some examples of Kinetic Energy include: • Running • Wood Burning • Rock Falling

  15. More Examples of Kinetic Energy • Shooting a rubber band. • Water falling over the fall. • A Yo-Yo in motion. • Releasing the arrow from the bow.

  16. How does burning wood have kinetic energy? It’s an example of kinetic energy because when the wood is burning it is releasing its stored energy. Released energy = Kinetic energy!!

  17. Summary of What You’ve Learned … Let’s go through some ideas: • If I am holding bowling ball in my hand it has potential energy. • When I release the SAME bowling ball down the bowling alley it now has kinetic energy. • Remember: Energy can be transformed from potential energy to kinetic energy. Kinetic energy can be transformed into potential energy.
