Empowering Brazilian Unprivileged Communities with High Geotechnological Tools – Brito, P. L., et al. Article Motivation and Goal • High- geotech tools are not so far away any more from the most needed communities; • We hear about projects using it; • What are they doing? • How are they dealing with the gap between high technology and low life quality? Between local and global? • Goal: Present some experiences that show how these tools are helping unprivileged communities to take their place in this new globalized world, while empowering themselves to comprehend and effectively participate on a sustainable territorial planning and management.
Empowering Brazilian Unprivileged Communities with High Geotechnological Tools – Brito, P. L., et al. Some High Geo-tech Tools – Global Navigation Satellite System – Geobrowsers – Remote Sensing Products – Geographic Information Systems – Collaborative internet mapping
Empowering Brazilian Unprivileged Communities with High Geotechnological Tools – Brito, P. L., et al. Methodology Experiences source: Figura busca • Internet general and academic na internet search engines using Portuguese keywords related to the theme • Collaborative maps platforms • Brazilian GIS specialized journal • Experiences in which some of the authors have participated
Empowering Brazilian Unprivileged Communities with High Geotechnological Tools – Brito, P. L., et al. Methodology A catalog of Brazilian experiences with a representative number of contributions was created. Brazilian projects or publications that presented an experience of poor communities that have participated on the process of mapping themselves were identified and described.

Empowering Brazilian Unprivileged Communities with High Geotechnological Tools – Brito, P. L., et al. Kabu Institute • The project located in an Amazonia • Conceived for Kayapó indigenous by a company specialized in GIS. • Use geotechnology to assist in the preservation of the indigenous area. – GPS devices to collect the coordinates of locations where there is some kind of illegal practice. – Information is added to maps and reports, developed by Kabu Institute, and sent to the Federal Police and to Funai (National Indigenous Foundation). www.kabu.org.br

Empowering Brazilian Unprivileged Communities with High Geotechnological Tools – Brito, P. L., et al. PNGEO – Beekeepers at rural communities Goals: • Investigate possible improvement for honey production, • Generate a geographical data base for CBA planning and monitoring activities 1.5km http://www.brasilapicola.com.br/pngeo
Empowering Brazilian Unprivileged Communities with High Geotechnological Tools – Brito, P. L., et al. PNGEO – Beekeepers at rural communities Geotech use: • beekeepers and professional rural assistants collect geographical coordinates using GPS devices and to register information about beekeepers residences, apiaries, honey processing houses, water sources , agrochemical farming , etc. • Google Earth is also used as a plug- in application of the software TrackMaker, allowing rural producers to recognize apiaries distribution according to land cover.

Empowering Brazilian Unprivileged Communities with High Geotechnological Tools – Brito, P. L., et al. Discussion and conclusion • Popularity of GNSS technology • Smartphones with GNSS receiver are not yet popular at poor comunities, but mobiles with digital camera features are. • Access to internet has been highly improved at under privileged urban communities, as well as at small towns at poor regions of Brazil.
Empowering Brazilian Unprivileged Communities with High Geotechnological Tools – Brito, P. L., et al. Discussion and conclusion • Extension of Brasil x capilarity achieved by rural assistants professionals • Motivation for voluntier collaboration x NGOs, Universities x Government role • Bet on youth participation • Continuous volunteer participation Local leaders are tired of meetings, demands results. labs and pilot projects (at all levels) that require a lot of their time and do not turn into any benefit* to their community;
Empowering Brazilian Unprivileged Communities with High Geotechnological Tools – Brito, P. L., et al. Discussion and conclusion • absence of the government in territorial planning and actions at slums; • city maps, where community features do Very small municipality (Itatim – BA) at wikimapia not appear; • a place in a web map may become a place in society. Poor comunity área at Rio de Janeiro
