  1. Emerson WATCH D.O.G.S. What is WATCH D.O.G.S.? Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) is the safe school initiative of the National Center for Fathering that involves fathers and father figures to help create a more safe and secure learning environment in our nation’s schools. Watch D.O.G.S. are fathers, grandfathers, step-fathers, uncles, and other father figures who volunteer at their student's school.

  2. Interested? Follow These Steps: 1. Become an approved Everett Public Schools volunteer. All Emerson volunteers must be an approved Everett Public Schools volunteer. These › approvals are good for three years. You may see the office for an approval form or complete the process online. Are you unsure if you are approved? Contact our Office Manager. 2. Choose a day that works for you. We ask that you commit to the minimum of one half-day (full-days are encouraged) and give › at least one weeks prior notice to your volunteering day. Once you have chosen a date please e-mail Jason Mayer at Jmayer@everettsd.org or complete our sign up form on our website. 3. Have a great day with your student at school! Please check in at the office at 8:45. You will receive your Watch D.O.G.S. shirt and vest › along with your schedule. You will enjoy a day on the school's campus volunteering in classrooms, spending time out at recess, having lunch with your student and being present in the school. Your day will end at 3:40.

  3. A Typical WATCH D.O.G.S. Day › Arrive to Emerson at 8:45 – Help with directing parking lot traffic, breakfast supervision, lineup, hang out with your student. › Volunteer in classrooms – Spend time in your student’s class and volunteer in other classrooms around the building. › Eat lunch with your student – Have lunch with your student and join them out at recess. › Dismissal – Help with student dismissal. Your day will end around 3:40.

The Importance of Student Attendance › Fact: School Attendance = Student Success › Fact: Students who miss the first 30 minutes of school feel disconnected with the school day routine the rest of the day. › Fact: Students who start to have chronic absenteeism during the early years of elementary school (both excused and unexcused) perform lower academically throughout their academic career.

  9. Excused Absences Excused Absences › The following are valid excuses for absences and tardiness and describe the process to have an absences or tardy excused. A. Participation in a district or school-approved activity or instructional program. B. Illness, health condition, or medical appointment. C. Family emergency D. Religious purposes *** The principal (or designee) has the authority to determine if an absence meets the above criteria for an excused absences

  10. Tardy VS. Absence Tardy/Part Day Absence Students are tardy if they arrive after the published start time or leave before the published end time for school or class. At the elementary level, a student’s attendance will be recorded as a half day absence for school if the student is more than 30 minutes late or if the student leaves 30 minutes or more early . Full Day Absence A full day absence is defined as a student failing to attend the majority of hours or periods in that student’s average school day of seat-time classes (50% or greater of the day unattended).

  18. Emerson’s Attendance Programs 1. Whole School A-T-T-E-N-D-A-N-C-E program › If ALL students attend class, classroom gets a letter, once they spell out A-T-T-E-N-D-A-N-C-E they will earn a popcorn party. › Class with the most popsicle parties during the year, will win a popsicle party and get to throw a pie in the principals’ face. › We are in need of popcorn poppers, please see the office if you are interested. 2. Individual Attendance program › Student will be exempt from classroom program › Staff member will check in daily with student who will receive a sticker on their chart for attending school. Once the student attends school for 5 consecutive days they will earn prize box. › Students with 100% attendance each month will earn gold stickers to show their great job! 3. After School Program › For students that have unexcused absences longer than 30 minutes. › Student will be required to make up learning through our After School program. Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:30-4:30pm, the activity bus will take students home. ›
