  3. What was the remit ? • Recruit volunteers to come and spend time with residents doing befriending and activities • Bring the community to our 10 care homes • Would this be a hard task ?????

  4. Setting up a system • A recruitment process Including DBS’s and Volunteer agreements • Training including Dementia awareness and Dementia friends • On going support

  5. Contacts • Advertise – Posters, leaflets • Develop net works • VAS – a wealth of guidance • University of Sheffield • Community groups and buildings • Community training and developmental links

  6. Positive or Negative • It has taken a while to get all the care homes on board with the concept . • Almost there

Why to people volunteer • An interest in Health and Social Care (CV and experience ) • Wanting a pathway into care work • To give back to their community • To give back to the care home • Miss their Grandparents • Time on their hands • Making a new life in Sheffield • To gain confidence generally – social anxiety

Relationship between activity workers and our volunteers • Benefits • Volunteers can (with investment) be a massive help to our activity workers • Our activity workers are tasked with providing social stimulation and company and entertainment to our residents - volunteers help us do this and bring the community to our homes

  9. What volunteers do for activities • Volunteers mean that activity workers can involve more residents at one time • Volunteers can provide company and simulation at times that the activity workers are not working • Volunteers can befriend residents who don’t get (many)visitors • Volunteers can help physically transport residents to activities - Simple wheel chair training can make this happen safely – this record with be added to Vol training sheet

  10. Volunteers V Students • It is vital that each team recognises the difference between a compulsory student placement and a volunteer giving of their own time

  17. We keep adding new volunteer roles • We now have a advert in voluntary action Sheffield for people to come and assist at meal times • A volunteer will be taking a resident out shopping – this could be something we advertise for

  21. Play List for Life-Make it happen We are a registered Help point • We are now advertising for play list volunteers • Display a poster • and a window sticker • Get the staff to actively use the play lists
