  1. PARCC Parent Night East Greenwich Twp. School District February 10, 2015 February 11, 2015

  2. Why Change?

  3. PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) • Designed to measure whether students are on track to be successful in college and their careers • Computer-based assessments: Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA) • Administered to students in grades 3-8

  4. Student Implications PARCC • Data used in conjunction with district-wide measures to get baseline on students strengths & needs for classroom instruction • Data used in conjunction with additional measures to identify additional supports • Data is NOT utilized in determining report card grades, grade level advancement, etc.

  5. PARCC States

  6. Who Must Take 2014-2015 PARCC Grades 3-8  General Education  English Learners-except newly arrived ELL students who may be excluded from taking ELA/Literacy assessment  Special Education-except severely handicapped student who will take APA or DLM as specified in their IEP

  7. Goals Develop tests Report results worth taking worth using Texts worth reading Valid Essays worth writing Reliable Problems worth solving Accessible to all Timely students Actionable

  8. How is PARCC Different from NJASK?

  9. How is PARCC- ELA Different from NJASK? • PARCC content focuses on 3 CCSS shifts: – Text complexity – Evidence-based responses – Content-rich nonfiction text • PARCC task structure includes: – Multiple texts (one anchor and additional text(s)/video) • PARCC format utilizes technology: – Incorporation of videos – Technology Enhanced Items (TEI): drag and drop, drop-down menus, multiple checkboxes, – Accessibility Features: highlighter, line reader, magnifier, answer eliminator, flagging • PARCC writing rubrics: – One for Narrative and One for Research Simulation/Literary Analysis – Grade Bands: 3, 4-5, 6-11

  10. How is PARCC- Math Different from NJASK? • Three Key Shifts: – Multiplication/Division of Whole Numbers & Fractions – Procedural skills and fluency – Application • PARCC format utilizes technology: – Embedded tools such as a calculator, ruler, etc. – Technology Enhanced Items (TEI): drag and drop, drop-down menus, multiple checkboxes – Accessibility Features: highlighter, line reader, magnifier, answer eliminator, flagging

  11. PBA + EOY = PARCC Score Performance-Based End of Year Assessment Assessment (PBA) (EOY) • After 75% of school year • After 90% of school year • Extended tasks • Shorter responses • PCR: • EBCR (Evidence Based – Literary Analysis Constructed response) – Research Simulation Task • TECR (Technology Enhanced – Narrative Constructed Response) • EBCR (Evidence Based Constructed response) • TECR (Technology Enhanced Constructed Response)

  12. Performance Based Test (PBA) Flow Chart ELA Sessions Math Sessions Unit Unit Unit Unit Unit 1 2 3 1 2  Occurs after approximately 75 percent of instructional time is complete  The ELA will focus on writing effectively when analyzing text  Emphasis on applying math skills, concepts, and understanding to solve multi-step problems  Integration of math practice standards (abstract reasoning, precision, perseverance & Math tools

  13. PARCC Unit Times

  14. End-of-Year Test Administration Flow Chart ELA Sessions Math Sessions Unit Unit Unit Unit 1 2 1 2  The EOY Administration occurs after approximately 90 percent of instructional time is complete  Focus on reading comprehension  Emphasis on demonstration of conceptual understanding and mathematical fluency from major content within the grade level

  16. Accessibility Features • On the PARCC computer-based assessments, accessibility features are tools or preferences that are either built into the assessment system or provided externally by test administrators.

  17. Accessibility Features Item Explanation Audio Amplification The student raises or lowers the volume control, as needed, using headphones. Final volume must be set prior to testing. Blank Paper The student is provided blank scratch paper to take notes (provided by test and/or work through items during testing administrator) Eliminate Answer The student electronically “crosses out” possible answer choices Choices (for multiple choice items only). Flag Items for The student electronically “flags” items to review later. Review Highlight Tool The student electronically highlights text as needed. Available colors include pink, blue, yellow, and white.

  18. Accessibility Features Item Explanation Headphones The student uses to minimize distraction, or filter external noise during testing (in addition to when headphones are required for the ELA/literacy assessment). Line Reader Tool The student uses an onscreen tool to assist in reading by raising and lowering the tool for each line of text onscreen. NotePad The student writes notes using embedded NotePad application. Pop-up Glossary The student is able to view definitions of pre-selected, construct-irrelevant words by hovering over underlined words. The definition appears in a popup text box. Writing Tools The student uses writing process tools for written responses, including cut and paste, copy, underline, bold, and insert bullets. Writing tools are available in the constructed response items on the ELA/literacy performance-based assessment.
