 2,500 ¡to ¡800 ¡B.C.E. ¡ • 24 ¡Beacon ¡Hill ¡ ¡Natural ¡Hill, ¡possibly ¡uDlised ¡as ¡a ¡beacon, ¡with ¡ scarping ¡and ¡a ¡slight ¡ditch, ¡thought ¡to ¡be ¡ defensive. ¡ ¡ ¡ • 25 ¡Barrow ¡ ¡Site ¡of ¡a ¡probable ¡Bronze ¡Age ¡round ¡burial ¡ barrow/mound ¡now ¡destroyed. ¡

Iron ¡Age 
 800 ¡B.C.E ¡to ¡43 ¡A.D. ¡ 3 ¡Iron ¡Age ¡Square ¡Barrow. ¡ • ¡ ¡ ¡Square ¡enclosure ¡– ¡a ¡single ¡small ¡square ¡Ded ¡to ¡an ¡enclosure ¡ditch ¡approx ¡6m ¡ across. ¡ ¡Possibly ¡burial. ¡ 10 ¡ ¡Burnt ¡Mound ¡ • ¡Basically ¡a ¡fire ¡site. ¡ ¡EvaluaDon ¡of ¡an ¡area ¡on ¡the ¡floodplain ¡of ¡the ¡River ¡Idle ¡ revealed ¡evidence ¡of ¡a ¡field ¡system ¡and ¡a ¡burnt ¡mound. ¡ 13 ¡Beehive ¡Quern ¡ • ¡The ¡top ¡stone ¡of ¡a ¡bee-­‑hive ¡quern ¡is ¡kept ¡in ¡the ¡garden ¡of ¡the ¡finder ¡at ¡Wiseton ¡ Home ¡Farm. ¡ ¡It ¡was ¡ploughed ¡up ¡in ¡1970. ¡ ¡ ¡ 20 ¡Prehistoric ¡Field ¡System ¡ • ¡Found ¡during ¡Fieldwalking ¡Survey ¡1984-­‑91. ¡ ¡An ¡Iron ¡Age ¡field ¡system ¡found ¡on ¡ hillslopes ¡marked ¡by ¡low ¡banks ¡or ¡lynchets ¡( ¡ridges ¡) ¡

Iron ¡Age ¡and/or ¡Roman ¡ • 1 ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡Rectangular ¡Enclosure ¡ ¡ ¡Crop ¡marks ¡of ¡an ¡enclosure ¡possibly ¡rectangular ¡with ¡internal ¡divisions. ¡ ¡ ¡ 4 ¡Circular ¡Detached ¡Enclosure. ¡ • ¡ ¡ ¡The ¡crop ¡mark ¡of ¡a ¡possible ¡circular ¡enclosure ¡defined ¡by ¡a ¡single ¡ditch ¡ with ¡a ¡diameter ¡of ¡approx ¡15m. ¡ ¡ 8 ¡and ¡9 ¡LPRIA/Roman ¡Enclosures. ¡ ¡ • ¡Fragmentary ¡ditched ¡enclosures ¡are ¡visible ¡as ¡crop ¡marks ¡on ¡air ¡ photographs. ¡ ¡Probably ¡part ¡of ¡the ¡field ¡system. ¡ 16 ¡Gringley ¡on ¡the ¡Hill ¡Brickyard ¡( ¡disused ¡). ¡ • ¡ ¡ ¡Roman ¡podery ¡& ¡coins ¡c. ¡AD ¡80-­‑400 ¡found ¡in ¡quanDty ¡with ¡wells ¡and ¡ Dmber ¡buildings; ¡also ¡Iron ¡Age ¡podery ¡& ¡a ¡Swarling ¡type ¡brooch ¡

Roman ¡– ¡part ¡1 
 43 ¡A.D. ¡to ¡410 ¡A.D. ¡ 5 ¡Roman ¡Remains ¡ • ¡Many ¡Roman ¡relics ¡found ¡during ¡the ¡cufng ¡of ¡the ¡Chesterfield ¡canal ¡tunnel ¡at ¡Drakeholes. ¡ ¡Supposed ¡site ¡ of ¡a ¡small ¡Roman ¡staDon. ¡ ¡Coins ¡of ¡ConstanDne ¡( ¡AD ¡306 ¡– ¡337 ¡) ¡and ¡human ¡bones ¡found. ¡ 6 ¡Old ¡Road ¡ • ¡An ¡old ¡road ¡now ¡mainly ¡ploughed ¡out ¡but ¡can ¡be ¡disDnguished ¡in ¡places. ¡ ¡ 7 ¡Romano-­‑BriDsh ¡OccupaDon ¡ • ¡Crop ¡marks ¡forming ¡a ¡series ¡of ¡small ¡enclosures ¡with ¡an ¡apparent ¡road ¡on ¡an ¡E-­‑W ¡orientaDon. ¡ ¡This ¡is ¡a ¡ small ¡Romano-­‑Britain ¡occupaDon ¡site ¡set ¡on ¡a ¡sandy ¡ridge ¡elevaDon. ¡ ¡Several ¡sherds ¡of ¡coarse ¡grey ¡ware ¡ found ¡& ¡fragments ¡of ¡field ¡drainage ¡Dle ¡and ¡a ¡few ¡Roman ¡pieces. ¡ 11 ¡RecDlinear ¡Enclosures ¡ • ¡Crop ¡marks ¡of ¡a ¡cluster ¡of ¡at ¡least ¡10 ¡sub-­‑rectangular ¡enclosures, ¡probably ¡of ¡Romano-­‑Britain ¡date. ¡ ¡May ¡ extend ¡east. ¡ ¡There ¡are ¡many ¡marks, ¡some ¡ancient ¡and ¡some ¡modern, ¡probably ¡connected ¡with ¡drainage. ¡ 12 ¡Romano-­‑BriDsh ¡Sedlement ¡ • ¡Site ¡of ¡a ¡Romano-­‑BriDsh ¡hut, ¡¼ ¡mile ¡southwest ¡of ¡Woods ¡Farm ¡was ¡discovered ¡by ¡ploughing. ¡ ¡ExcavaDon ¡ revealed ¡a ¡cobbled ¡floor ¡of ¡a ¡former ¡wooden ¡structure ¡about ¡30 ¡feet ¡in ¡diameter. ¡ ¡Coarse ¡podery ¡was ¡ also ¡recovered, ¡the ¡base ¡of ¡a ¡Samian ¡cup ¡stamped ¡AT ¡TILLIM, ¡2 ¡bronze ¡enamel ¡brooches ¡and ¡20 ¡coins ¡of ¡ the ¡4thC ¡AD. ¡ ¡The ¡finds ¡are ¡in ¡Sheffield ¡City ¡Museum. ¡ ¡Surface ¡finds ¡of ¡Roman ¡podery ¡etc ¡in ¡neighbouring ¡

 43 ¡A.D. ¡to ¡410 ¡A.D. ¡ 14 ¡Gringley ¡Top ¡Lock ¡South ¡Side ¡ • ¡Roman ¡coins, ¡Romano-­‑BriDsh ¡podery ¡and ¡a ¡follis ¡of ¡MagnenDus. ¡ 21 ¡Topley ¡Farm ¡ • ¡Possible ¡Villa. ¡ ¡Romano-­‑BriDsh ¡material ¡including ¡a ¡very ¡wide ¡scader ¡of ¡grey ¡ware ¡and ¡ presDgious ¡Samian ¡podery, ¡building ¡debris, ¡flue ¡Dles, ¡slag, ¡coal ¡and ¡fragments ¡of ¡sheet ¡ bronze ¡of ¡trapezoidal ¡shape ¡found ¡southeast ¡of ¡Topley ¡Farm. ¡ 22 ¡Highfield ¡Farm ¡ • ¡Sherds ¡of ¡Romano-­‑BriDsh ¡coarse ¡grey ¡ware ¡and ¡oyster ¡shells ¡found ¡in ¡1959 ¡at ¡2 ¡sites ¡behind ¡ Highfield ¡Farm. ¡ ¡The ¡material ¡was ¡dated ¡to ¡the ¡3 rd ¡C ¡and ¡is ¡now ¡in ¡Nofngham ¡University ¡ Museum. ¡ 26 ¡Meadow/Pasture ¡ • ¡Romano-­‑BriDsh ¡grey ¡ware ¡podery ¡fragments ¡found ¡in ¡meadow ¡under ¡pasture. ¡ • 27 ¡Gringley ¡Quarry. ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡Two ¡sherds ¡of ¡Romano-­‑BriDsh ¡coarse ¡grey ¡ware ¡and ¡Mesolithic ¡type ¡flint ¡flakes ¡found ¡on ¡the ¡ edge ¡of ¡the ¡quarry. ¡

Dark ¡Ages 
 410 ¡to ¡1066 ¡ • 2 ¡Dark ¡Age ¡Logboat ¡ ¡Logboat ¡dredged ¡out ¡of ¡the ¡northern ¡bank ¡of ¡the ¡River ¡ Idle ¡during ¡works ¡near ¡Madersey ¡Thorpe. ¡ ¡The ¡boat ¡is ¡ hollowed ¡out ¡of ¡one ¡piece ¡of ¡oak, ¡canoe ¡shaped ¡with ¡ pointed ¡bow, ¡stern ¡and ¡sides ¡shaped ¡to ¡give ¡a ¡keel-­‑like ¡ bodom. ¡ ¡13.5m ¡long ¡and ¡0.87m ¡across ¡at ¡the ¡gunwales. ¡ ¡ Now ¡at ¡The ¡NaDonal ¡MariDme ¡Museum ¡being ¡stabilised ¡ and ¡studied. ¡ ¡The ¡boat ¡has ¡a ¡carbon ¡– ¡14 ¡date ¡of ¡around ¡ 460 ¡AD. ¡

Medieval 
 1066 ¡to ¡1485 ¡ • 18 ¡Market ¡Cross ¡ ¡ The ¡remains ¡of ¡a ¡Medieval ¡market ¡cross. ¡ • 19 ¡Church ¡of ¡Saint ¡Peter ¡and ¡Saint ¡Paul. ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ Medieval ¡church ¡established ¡circa ¡12 th ¡C. ¡ • 29 ¡Medieval ¡ ¡Ridge ¡and ¡Furrow ¡ ¡ Agricultural ¡remains ¡sDll ¡in ¡existence ¡as ¡earthworks. ¡
