Nation’s Largest 4-yr Public University System 23 CAMPUSES IN THE CAL STATE SYSTEM ▶ All campuses use www.calstate.edu/apply for college applications and other information including financial aid. ▶ Each campus has a web link to their website. ▶ All campuses required completion of CSU - UC A- G courses for admission. ▶ DHS diploma with distinction and advanced scholar diploma align with the A-G requirements ▶ Each college has an minimum eligibility index found on individual campus websites. ▶ All campuses require either the SAT or the ACT exam. CSU’s use only the SAT math and critical reading scores ▶ ▶ DHS students are given first priority for admission to Cal State East Bay and Cal State San Francisco. If these are not on the list of preferred campuses, we recommend ▶ students include one of them as a “safety” school.
CSU IMPACTION “IMPACTION DOES NOT MEAN IMPOSSIBLE” 2 categories of Impaction ▶ Impacted Majors - Number of eligible candidates far exceed the number of spaces ▶ May be admitted in an alternative major Fullerton, Long Beach, San Diego, San Jose, and San Luis ▶ Obispo campuses are impacted in all majors ▶ Impacted Campus – number of eligible applicants exceeds number of instructional resources. ▶ Impaction is a protection of over crowding & being about to serve admitted students.
APPLYING TO THE CSU’S A-G COURSES * 10 TH /11 TH GPA * SAT OR ACT SCORES ▶ Applications are completed online at www.calstate.edu/apply and will open October 1st ▶ When you have submitted one application to a campus, the “Express Mode” will auto populate applications to other designated campuses. ▶ Application window is October 1 st through November 30 th for most campuses. ▶ SAT/ACT should be completed by November testing date. ▶ Check individual campuses to confirm if they will accept a December sitting. ▶ Include a “backup” campus with your top choices (remember DHS has priority at CSU East Bay and SF)
HELPFUL HINTS - COMMON MISTAKES ▶ Before you start: Have your transcript, current schedule, test scores, Soc Security # & parent’s annual income. Set aside uninterrupted time (although you can stop and start). ▶ Set up an email designated for your college and scholarship correspondence. BE PROFESSIONAL! ▶ READ AND FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY ▶ If you are retaking a class to improve a D or F grade, *only use the improved grade* in your application. If you have not made up the D, report it and use the“in progress” option in the application ▶ On the profile page you have to indicate if you have taken any college classes. That is the only way you will later be able to add which college and add the courses. ▶ WATCH DEADLINES. Don’t wait to the last minute!
HELPFUL HINTS - COMMON MISTAKES ▶ If you get an error message (red box), don’t panic – READ the warning, make the correction or check the box @ the bottom to continue with application. ▶ Still have problems, check the CSU mentor help page. Call the CSU help desk or see your DHS counselor. ▶ Be professional and use etiquette when contacting the colleges. They can track the inquiries. ▶ Proofread and have someone else review before submitting. Common errors: Names not capitalized, mis-spelled course names, course/grades errors. Double check EVERYTHING. ▶ WATCH DEADLINES! ▶ DON’T PROCRASTINATE
MISC TIPS ▶ Spend some time visiting the individual campus websites: ▶ Review the individual campus freshman profile. You should match fairly closely if you are considering applying. ▶ Take the vitural tours ▶ Check the social media sites for the colleges and see what is trending. ▶ DON’T CATCH SENIOR-ITIS– Acceptance letters are *conditional.* Don’t let Sem 2 grades jeopardize your college acceptance. ▶ Visit the campus in person. Call ahead and ask for a student to give you a tour. It’s not too late.

DON’T PANIC ▶ (unless you waited until the last minute!!) ▶ READ the instructions again ▶ READ the warning boxes and follow the instructions ▶ Use the Help tab on www.calstate.edu.apply ▶ Contact the CSU help counselors ▶ Meet with your DHS Counselors ▶ Don’t wait until the end of November!!
