Amateur sporting clubs may not have access to specialist medical staff ▪ Management of on field emergencies falls to usually non medical volunteers ▪ SMA endorses a variety of assessment tools - DRSABCD, STOP, TOTAPS- to assess return to ▪ play after injury Currently there is a dearth of literature regarding on field emergency management in ▪ amateur sporting clubs
A proposal for a method where non medical personnel could triage and assess on field ▪ emergencies without the need for a diagnosis For the method to grounded in basic trauma/resuscitation protocols ▪ Use a pilot study to assess the potential effects of this method in the setting of an amateur ▪ university soccer club

hour length presentation to the coaching and administrative staff at an amateur university ▪ soccer club initial presentation as a concept, then reiteration after presenting five different clinical ▪ issues: head injury, collapse. bleeding, trauma, breathing difficulties management based on triage, not diagnosis ▪ post presentation simulation and survey conducted ▪
participants were surveyed and asked to rank their confidence in dealing with head ▪ injury, bleeding, collapse, trauma, breathing problems and team-work in emergency situations asked to rank their confidence on a Likert scale of 1-5 ▪ surveyed prior and post the presentation taking place ▪ A Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed rank test was used to detect statistical significance in ▪ the confidence of participants pre and post the emergency preparedness “talk test” presentation.
Total number of participants: 7 ▪ Participant characteristics ▪
Statistically significant improvement in self-reported confidence post presentation in all ▪ categories apart from bleeding and teamwork.
Audience feedback : ▪ Engaging content due to its ▪ practicality Traffic light comparison was well ▪ appreciated Audience felt empowered ▪ Communication and repeated ▪ assessments are key Limitations ▪ Small sample size ▪ No follow up to measure ▪ knowledge retention
The “Talk Test” has potential to be used to teach non medical volunteers how to triage on ▪ field emergencies However needs validation in larger studies ▪
