What we are looking for… The Lewiston Fire Department is looking for Reserve Firefighters. Reserve Firefighters are hired to fill vacancies when full - time personnel are sick, on vacation, away at training, etc. When full - time positions become available, openings are filled exclusively from the pool of Reservists. Reserve Firefighter Trainees are recruited under a competitive testing process. Successful candidates are required to pass a written exam, a physical agility test, a medical exam, a background check and possess a valid driver's license. Applicants must be able to acquire EMT certification and/or be eligible for reciprocity certification as an Idaho and Washington EMT. As a condition of employment, Reserve Trainees are required to complete an initial training academy. New employees are classified Trainees until they have completed the training academy and pass a fire department physical. They subsequently will be reclassified to Reserve Firefighter status with an increase in wages. We are looking for Reservists interested in bettering our community. What we have to offer… • Wages Reserve Firefighters start at $14.33 an hour. The shifts are usually 24 hours long and Reservists can work up to 72 hours in a row before having a mandatory 12 hours off. Reservists are used on an as - needed basis so shifts can be smaller in duration. There is no limit to how much or how many shifts Reservists can work as long as opportunities are available. • Benefits Reserve Firefighters are eligible to receive benefits through the city just as full - time employees do. These include life insurance, PERSI retirement, if you meet eligibility requirements listed below and medical insurance if you meet the requirements set forth in the Affordable Healthcare Act and Local 1773 Collective Labor Agreement. PERSI retirement : Once hired as a Reservist you may become eligible to start putting into PERSI retirement. To be eligible you must average 20 hours per week for 5 consecutive months. You will be able to start planning for the future even though you are not a full - time Firefighter. If you are hired as a full - time employee of the city, this money will be a great start for your future. • Training Opportunity Working at Lewiston Fire Department is an opportunity to constantly train. You will learn and practice all aspects of being a Firefighter, including extrication, firefighting, rope rescue, water rescue, ice rescue, and EMS. At the end of the Reserve Academy you will have the opportunity to go to a live burn where you will practice important firefighting skills. • Paramedic Program Lewis Clark State College offers a Paramedic program through Workforce Training. In the program you will have the opportunity to ride and learn from Lewiston Fire Paramedics. If you are interested in becoming a Paramedic, the reserve program is a great opportunity to further your work experience and expose you to working with paramedics in the field.
What you need to do… 1. Fill out an application . They are available at Lewiston City Hall or online at the link provided. (applications will be kept on file for one calendar year, and you will be contacted for the next available testing date). 2. Submit the application, resume and cover letter . Submit all three documents to the HR Department. If already enrolled in an EMT class, you must include the name of your instructor, their phone number and the expected date of completion. Proof of your certification is required if you are already an EMT. 3. EMT certification . You must acquire and/or be in the process of acquiring an EMT certification for Idaho and Washington. 4. Driver’s License . To be eligible for hire, you must possess a valid driver’s license. 5. Background Check . All candidates must be able to pass a background check after completing the testing and interviewing process. 6. Drug Testing . All candidates must be able to pass a drug test prior to being hired. Prepare • Written Exam . The first step of the process is to pass a civil service exam. There are books available to help you get ready. Look for civil service practice tests for fire. • Physical Agility Test . After passing the written exam, candidates will be invited to participate in a physical agility test composed of situations one may encounter from day to day on the job. • Oral interview . Candidates will be selected for oral interviews after successful completion of the physical agility test. • Academy . If you are selected after the interviewing process, you will be given a spot in the LFD training academy. The academy will consist of 240 hours of training that will include distance learning, hands - on skills and field training. There will also be a physical fitness requirement that will take place during the academy. The academy will take approximately 14 weeks and will challenge you both mentally and physically.
