HISTORICAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL STRUCTURE: Suloglu was established as a principality first by the Thracians and invaded by Byzantine and Greeks respectively. The successive invasions continued until the Ottoman armies under command of Suleiman Pasha and Lala Sahin Pasha cleared the region off Byzantine and Greek invasion. Each of the two successful pashas were rewarded with a farm in the region. Today’s Suloglu farm was given to Suleiman Pasha. Thereafter the region was called “Suloglu”. During the Balkan war, people migrated to Anatolia. Suloglu, which was invaded by the Greeks in 1920-1922, was saved on 22 November 1922. Afterwards, the district became part of the Tatars’ sub -district in Lalapasa and remained as a village till 1934. It became a township attached to the country town in 1934, followed by the status of municipality gained in 1967 and the status of district on 20.05.1990 in accordance with the LAW NUMBER 2644 ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF 130 DISTRICTS. This decision came into effect on 12 September 1990. The district has one municipality and 10 villages. Villages are called Akardere, Buyuk Gerdelli, Domurcali, Geckinli, Keramettin, Kukuler, Sulecik, Tasli Sekban, Tatarlar and Yagcili. Central district is divided into four administrative units, which are called Merkez Borough, Cumhuriyet Borough, Safak Borough and Yeni Borough. Suloglu is situated 32 kms distant from the province of Edirne and it is surrounded by Kirklareli in the east, Edirne in the west, Havsa in the south and Lalapasa in the north. Altitude above sea level is 100 meters and covers an area of 250 square kilometres.
Even though the area is quite fluctuating by nature, this does not have an adverse effect on agricultural activities. Vegetation cover is not rich and continental climate prevails in the region. So, summers are hot and dry, winters are cold and wet. As per the address based census of 2010, population of Suloglu district is 7628, 3394 of which reside in the centrum, 4234 in villages. 44% of the population live in the county town. SEKBAN 326 TATARLAR 388 YAGCILI 308 TOTAL POPULATION 8383 Health Status 8383 people reside in Suloglu and 4334 of these people are living in the county town and 4049 in villages. 1 health centre, which has been rendering services in its own building since 1997, and a health house available only in Geckinli village as dependent to the centrum are currently operating in the district. In addition, 2 physicians and 2 family health personnel are present in 41 and 42 Regional Family Medicine Departments. 1 physician, 1 health officer, 1 officer, 1 medical secretary, 8 nurses, 1 midwife, 6 emergency medical technicians, 1 servant and 1 driver (19 personnel in total) are employed in community healthcare centres. There is also an infirmary with 30 beds capacity where 2 physicians, 1 dentist, 1 veterinary and 1 nurse are employed to render polyclinic and treatment services for commissioned officers, sergeants, specialised sergeants, private soldiers and their family at the 54 th Mechanised Infantry Brigade in the boundaries of the district. In addition to the foregoing, there is 1 pharmacy and 3 veterinary surgeons in the county town. Approximately 3831 people share one physician in the district. Preventive health services, polyclinic and outpatient care run together in the healthcare service. Education and Culture Nursery and preschool activities are conducted at 4 branches in 3 classes opened within Suloglu Elementary School, Cumhuriyet Elementary School and B. Gerdelli Elementary School. There are 3 elementary schools with 1 to 8 classrooms. We have one multi-program high school, enabling studies in Turkish-Mathematics, Social Sciences and vocational departments such as electric-electronics, maternal and infant development. We have 850 students, 80 of whom are enrolled in preschool programmes, 645 in primary school and 125 in secondary school in the district.
61 teachers including 33 branch teachers, 28 class teachers, 4 kindergartners, 5 Turkish/Literature teachers, 4 mathematics teachers, 2 Science teachers, 2 Social Sciences teachers, 1 history teacher, 4 physical education teachers, 2 visual art teachers, 1 counsellor, 1 geography teacher, 1 philosophy teacher, 1 machinery- technical mould teacher, 1 electric-electronic teacher, 1 physics teacher, 1 chemistry teacher, 1 biology teacher provide services in addition to district director of national education, other personnel and 81 personnel engaged in educational services. Besides, services provided by the Directorate of Public Education Centre are conducted by the primary director and deputy director. 20 students share 1 teacher in pre-school education period; 17 students share 1 teacher (class-master) in primary education and 22 students share 1 teacher on the basis of elementary and secondary class masters. Schooling rate applicable to the pre-school educational period is found to be around 100%. The given rate is 100% in primary and 100% in secondary schools in the district. There are neither public or private student hostels nor lodgings in the district. The district has one directorate of public education centre and it continues with its activities at the government office. There is no library dependent on the Ministry of Culture in the district. There are however libraries dependent on the Ministry of National Education and Public Education Centre) Directorate of Public Education has got 1089 books, primary school has got 1200 books) Two pieces of tumulus and its surroundings situated at Ortadegirmen locality of Kukuler village are under preservation as first degree archaeological site; a small protected area is also under preservation as third degree natural and archaeological site. The district has no museums, cultural centre(s), theatre and movie theatre. No local newspapers are in circulation. There is one printing house, though. ECONOMIC CONDITION Community people are usually engaged in husbandry and stockbreeding. Part of the community people that live in rural area, which is economically not so developed, migrated to urban areas. The county town has 1 oil seeds cooperative, 1 agricultural credit cooperative, 1 aquacultural resources cooperative and 1 irrigation cooperative. In addition to this, there is 1 agricultural credit cooperative in Tatarlar village; one agricultural development cooperative in 7 villages and an irrigation cooperative in 7 villages. There is 1 Ziraat Bankasi and Isbank branches in the county town. Agriculture Economy of the district relies on agricultural activities. Wheat, sunflower and corn are herbal products that dominate the agricultural activities in the district. Territorial boundaries of the district cover an area of 35.220 ha in total. 17.35 ha of this is qualified as arable fields, while 5 ha is qualified as vineyards. In addition, 3.089 ha woods and forestry, 5.305 ha meadow and pasture land are available in the area. Non agricultural area covers 9623 ha in the district. Suloglu Dam irrigates 1200 ha area, Kayali Dam irrigates 2600 ha area, Keramettin Lake irrigates 400 ha area, Sulecik Pond irrigates 5000 ha area, Geckinli Pond irrigates 400 ha area and public irrigations provide for an area of 840 ha. In total, 6300 ha area is irrigated. Sunflowers were planted and grown in 6000 ha area in 2010.
