Summary of the results of discussions in the aviation panel Russell Dudley The European Regions Airline Association (ERA)
Agenda • Our recommendations for the User Requirements Document • Our perceived R&D needs • Answers to the strategic questions asked from us 2
Priority applications for aviation • EGNOS an and Gal Galileo ser serving all all use users nee needs for or na navigation ‒ All VFR users will benefit from EGNOS/Galileo ‒ RNP APCH down to LPV to all IFR runway ends by 2024 ‒ New market: RNP APCH down to LPV to non-instrument runways: more than 2000 airports! ‒ GBAS to CATII/III with Galileo ‒ Helicopter operations with EGNOS: Low Level routes, PinS ‒ LPV combined with Enhanced Vision Systems, Synthetic Vision Systems ‒ Advanced operations: curved/steep approaches, flexible slopes, displaced threshold with EGNOS ‒ SBAS for potential future parallel approaches 3
Priority applications for aviation • EGNOS is is es essen enti tial l for or ADS DS-B B pos osit itionin ing ‒ Lightweight portable solutions for GA needed ‒ ‘ADS - B in’ applications ‒ ADS-B in Class G enhancing situational awareness ‒ Supporting radar rationalisation • Air ircraft tr trackin ing and auton onomous dis istress tr tracking ‒ Accurate positioning to locate aircraft in distress in dynamic situation ‒ Early identification of distress situations • Dr Drones ‒ U-Space ‒ Geofencing ‒ Detect and avoid ‒ Robust Navigation and surveillance 4
Highlights of our recommendations for the User Requirements document Surv Surveillance Nav avigation Keep up the work on LPV implementation on SBAS is the only technology which can satisfy the non-instrument runways! 99.9% availability GSA to support Aviation authorities in PBN Resilience is a must to enable ADS-B as primary implementation and usage means Ensure EGNOS coverage for EU-28 with LPV and Interoperability is a must LPV200 service ADS-B in and out essential in all airspace EGNOS compliance with ICAO Annex 10 Robustness is a must: protection vs spoofing/jamming Sea Search and and Resc Rescue RP RPAS AS/Drones Endorse continued work on Galileo superior performance in multipath remote ELT activation with environment facilitates operations in urban Galileo RLS areas, canyons, etc. EGNOS and Galileo enables geofencing accuracy and integrity Keep the discussion on GNSS Performance requirements ongoing! 5
Summary of our recommendations for the User Requirements document • It was a tough but productive work --- > Keep it up! • Good to have all applications and requirements in one single document! • Very useful to have all value chain representatives around the table: ANSPs, CAAs, airspace users from all communities: regional, business, general aviation), avionics, device manufacturer and even drones! • Clear performance parameters and schedule for Galileo: airspace users need time to get equipped 6
Our identified R&D needs • Wake vortex free separation approaches for mixed aircraft categories • GBAS GAST-F with DFMC (CAT II/III approaches) • Approaches to lower minima and taxiing guidance using SBAS and EVS/ SVS • EGNOS enabled system performance under a multilink ADS-B environment • MASPs for remote ELT activation for autonomous distress tracking • Drones: Detect and avoid, geofencing, robust navigation based on EGNOS and Galileo, Authenticated communication link, concept for VLL-drones navigation requirements 7
Answers to the questions asked • Which are the technologies/systems that can fulfil the requirements of your sector today? ‒ EGNOS, GPS, ILS, GBAS, DME/DME • Out of these technologies, which is the primary PNT solution at the moment, what are the alternative technologies you are using as backup? ‒ Primary Means: GPS / EGNOS ‒ Alternates: DME/DME, INS • What is your perception for the evolution of your requirements and related primary and alternative PNT systems in the next 10/15 years? ‒ A progress move to primary means GNSS based on Galileo / GPS augmented by A-RAIM and EGNOS 8
The work was built with a contribution of … ANSP’s Airspace users Airports Innovation and research Manufacturers 9
