  2. 1 What is a determiner? A determiner is a word that comes before a noun and gives extra information about the noun. A determiners tells you if it a general thing or a specific thing. Example: There is a chicken. There is one chicken. There is the chicken. www.grammarsaurus.co.uk

  4. 3 Determiner type 1: articles Definite and indefinite articles Definite – the The is a specific determiner: it refers to a particular noun/s that the speaker thinks the listener knows about e.g. the recipe books. In a sentence: I love to go into your kitchen, so I can browse through all of the recipe books. Indefinite - a an A and an are general determiners: they refer to one non-specific noun that the speaker thinks the listener does not know about e.g. a chick or an elephant.   5. 4 Determiner type 2: quantifiers These words give us more information about how many of the noun there are without giving a specific number. In a sentence: You have had several/lots of/some/many/enough sweets now, so put the rest away!   6. 5 Determiner type 3: numbers Cardinal numbers - give specific information about exactly how many of the noun there are. In a sentence: We are delighted to announce there were thirty-five applications. Example: one two five eighteen twenty-nine one hundred thousands two million Ordinal numbers refer to distribution of the noun. In a sentence: This will be my first/third/next/last slice of pizza!   9. 8 Determiner type 4 - distributive This type of determiner is used to give more specific information about a group or individual members of the group. They tell us how people or things are distributed or shared. In a sentence: Unsurprisingly, all of the school council voted against shortening lunch time.   11. 10 Determiner type 6: demonstrative Demonstrative determiners are used to demonstrate the identity of a noun. In a sentence: Would you like these/those trainers, Mario?   12. 11 Determiner type 7 – defining words These types of determiners are used to ask a question about a noun – the determiner indicates which person or thing is being referred to. In a sentence: Whose tickets are these?
