  2. LEARNING ObjECTIvES What's the value of community partnerships... from the student's perspective? What value does HOSA provide to help prepare students? What's the best way to engage students and utilize their skills within hospitals and clinics? In this session, we'll hear from the student's perspective, include State HOSA Officer Joy Charles on his experience working with community partners and being prepared for a future in healthcare. After attending this workshop, the attendee will be able to: • Describe the value students gain from partnerships with community healthcare providers • Describe solutions that help to welcome students into a workplace of compliance

  3. Joyabhishek (Joy) Charles From the moment Joyabhishek (Joy) Charles joined his HOSA chapter at Americus-Sumter High School, he fell in love with the community of like-minded students who shared his passion for healthcare. Joy wanted to take his admiration further by serving his chapter as an officer; however, he knew that he could still do more for his state’s HOSA organization. For this reason, he decided to apply to be an officer on the 2019-2020 Georgia HOSA State Executive Council. Through living each of HOSA’s core values of learning, leading, serving, and innovating, Joy knew he could use his HOSA leadership experience to serve as a valuable member of the team. Now, as a state officer, he hopes to inspire Georgia HOSA’s members to take their leadership and passion for healthcare to the next level. Joy will work towards creating an even stronger relationship between the State Executive Council and each of our chapters, especially through innovating new ideas for motivating HOSA members to attend our leadership conferences, participate in competitive events, and most importantly, to better serve their state and local communities. As a future health professional himself, Joy is working towards a career as a pediatric cardiologist, and knows that his new role at Georgia HOSA, with the support of each of its members and advisors, will continue to steer him in that direction.

  18. ENGAGING STUDENTS IN HOSPITALS/CLINICS ▲ The short attention span of students needs to be met with a frequent change in setting. ▲ At a time when students might be confused and/or lost about their post-secondary plans, it may be best for students to constantly rotate through various areas/fields within a hospital or clinic. ▲ Truly expose the student to the broad field of healthcare. ▲ Provide some guidance as to where the student feels comfortable working. ▲ Helps students acknowledge their weak points and know how to improve.

  19. BEST WAYS TO UTILIZE STUDENTS’ SKILLS For students who learn best “with their hands” ▲ Place students in areas of the hospital/clinic that constantly utilize the knowledge ▲ that they are currently learning in the classroom. Example : When students are learning about patient care/bedside manners, place ▲ him/her in a rotation with extensive patient interaction, such as medical-surgical nursing. For visual learners ▲ Place students in situations where a hands-on approach is not extensively used ▲ Example : placing a student in the operating room during a minor procedure. ▲ For auditory learners ▲ Place in an area where students are able to learn about the hospital setting ▲ through lectures or informal conversations. Example : Organizing a one-on-one interview-type setting between a student and a ▲ health professional.
