The Course Integrated Portfolio (Internally Examined) Solo Performance Composition – Student set brief 60% Practical Portfolio (Internally Examined) Ensemble Performance Composition – Board set brief Listening and Appraising (Externally Examined) 40% 1 hour 30 minute exam at the end of Yr. 11 4 Areas of Study
15% Integrated Portfolio Solo Performance Students may sing or play an instrument. Accompaniment may be live or pre-recorded. Performances need to be approximately 2 minutes long. Students are marked on their ability to: Perform a suitably challenging piece. Perform the piece accurately. Perform with expression and style.
15% Integrated Portfolio Composition – Student Set Brief Students typically compose for their instrument/voice. Some students notate their composition on computer software, but there are other options available. Students are marked on their ability to: Follow a coherent structure. Develop their ideas and vary musical elements, such as volume, expression, speed etc. Use appropriate musical techniques.
15% Practical Portfolio Ensemble Performance Students can choose their own groups. Instrumental and/or vocal options available. Students are marked on their ability to: Perform a suitably challenging piece. Perform the piece accurately. Perform with expression and style. Respond to the other performers in the group.
15% Integrated Portfolio Composition – Board Set Brief The exam board release the materials for this composition at the start of Year 11. Students have to respond to a brief set by the exam board using one of the stimuli given. Students are marked on their ability to: Follow a coherent structure. Develop their ideas and vary musical elements, such as volume, expression, speed etc. Use appropriate musical techniques. Use/develop/vary the stimulus chosen.

40% Listening and Appraising Exam Students will learn about and be examined on 4 Areas of Study: The Concerto Through Time Rhythms of the World Film (and game) Music Conventions of Pop The exam lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes and takes place at the end of Year 11. Students answer a combination of short answer, multiple choice, and essay-style questions.
40% Listening and Appraising Exam Students will be asked to: Identify instruments Describe how instruments are played. Notate a short melody Describe how a piece of music supports the mood of a film scene Describe texture, dynamic changes, tempo changes etc. Students who can’t already read treble clef will need to be willing to learn.
