The work place will demand skills in problem solving, innovation, adaption, working collaboratively, demonstrating initiative, productivity, taking responsibility, and leadership. The complex world in which today’s students will live requires that they communicate clearly, understand social and cultural contexts, and have the ability to be flexible in the face of challenges and changing circumstances. 8. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Q: Do I need to maintain a minimum GPA? A: The program encourages all students to maintain a 75% or higher GPA. This ensures that students meet minimum requirements for university acceptance. Students that do not meet this recommended average will not be turned away from the program, rather they will have access to additional academic support to help them work towards their goals.

  9. WHAT COMPETITIONS DOES THE PROGRAM ATTEND? Each year students attend one of the competitions put on by Fabulous Feet Productions, either Dance Evolutions or Dance Invasions. These competitions takes place in Bearspaw during the month of April. Students also participate in Eastside Dance Festival, which brings together dancers from many city schools to perform and network with peers and professionals in the dance community of Calgary. Each year, a second competition is decided on depending on dates and accessibility. Dancers will be informed of competition and dates by October of the academic year.

  10. IS THERE A COST OR FEE FOR THE PROGRAM? There is a fee associated with the program. This fee comes from competition fees, travel, accommodation, team jackets, guest choreographers and costuming. Staff work hard to ensure students can fundraise 80-100% of their fees. Traditionally, students have not had to pay more than $200.00.

  11. WHAT DO I DO IF FOREST LAWN HIGH SCHOOL IS NOT MY DESIGNATED SCHOOL? Students must contact the administration at Forest Lawn High School directly in order to complete the necessary transfer forms. What styles of dance does the program offer? The regular programming offers Ballet, Hip Hop, Jazz and Contemporary. Students will also have access to different styles, such as African, during the Eastside Dance Festival workships.

  12. IF I AM UNAVAILABLE/UNSURE OF THE JUNE AUDITION, WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS FOR GETTING INTO THE PROGRAM? Please contact the program teachers immediately. We will discuss and consider late applications on a case by case basis. If fall entrance is not available, we can consider options for entrance into program during the second semester. Emails: kkmcmahon@cbe.ab.ca (Ms. K. McMahon) emjanz@cbe.ab.ca (Ms. E. Janz)

  13. CAN I PLAY SPORTS/ HAVE A JOB/ ENGAGE IN OTHER EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES? Yes, the program takes place during the school day so students may choose to participate in other activities in the evening and weekend hours. The only stipulation is that if activities overlap with set competition days, students are required to attend the competitions. Dates for competitions are available early in the academic year, so students should be able to sort schedules ahead of time.

  14. WHAT IF I DO NOT WANT TO PURSUE DANCE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL, WILL I HAVE THE REQUIREMENTS I NEED FOR OTHER PROGRAMS? Yes! Students still need to take all the regular academic programming to attain their high school diploma. This means that you have all the requirements needed to choose an alternative career/educational path. Students will review what they need academically for their programming in grade 11 transistion meetings.

  15. WHAT DOES TRANSITIONING OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL LOOK LIKE? WHAT OPPORTUNITIES WILL I HAVE PAST HIGH SCHOOL TO PURSUE DANCE? Students have regular meetings with counselors and staff to help students plan for their future after high school. At the end of the grade 11 students participate in transition meetings. These meetings help students look at some of their talents, passions, and the goals they wish to pursue. Counselors, teachers, and students research potential programs and requirements for these programs. Students align their grade 12 year with the requirements needed for their chosen programs. In grade 12 counselors and teachers partner with students to complete applications and prepare for audition dates to the programs they have interest in attending.
