Biological Sciences in L&S Required major preparation: UCSB: General Chemistry series and labs § Biological Sciences series and labs § Maintain at least a 2.7 cumulative GPA in major preparation § courses, with no individual grade lower than ‘C’ Courses that are strongly recommended to ensure graduation within 2 years after transfer: Organic Chemistry series and labs (highly encouraged for 2- § year degree completion within the Biochemistry-Molecular Biology, Cell and Developmental Biology, Microbiology and Pharmacology majors) Calculus series § Physics series and labs § Office of Admissions
Economics Majors Selection § Meet basic transfer selection criteria § Required major preparation for Economics and Economics & Accounting majors must be completed before transferring to UCSB : Macroeconomics § Microeconomics § First and second semester calculus § Required pre-major GPA of at least 2.75 § No individual grade lower than ‘C’ in major prep § Office of Admissions
College of Engineering One of the most prestigious and smallest schools of § engineering at a major research university in the U.S. and amongst UC campuses Very selective for transfer students seeking admission § Seeks to provide its students with a strong theoretical § background plus opportunities for hands-on training and applied research needed to become leaders and innovators 5 majors available: chemical, computer, electrical, and § mechanical engineering, and computer science Office of Admissions Office of Admissions
Selective Math Majors Mathematical Sciences, B.S. § A degree for those who enjoy working with numbers and equations; a § hands-on major which focuses on how to solve real-world mathematical quandaries, particularly those with applications to the physical sciences and engineering. Mathematics, B.S. § Suitable if you wish to study the STUFF of mathematics. As opposed to § a computational approach many are exposed to in lower division calculus classes, this degree dives well beyond the shallow waters of formulas and calculators into a world of mathematical theory. Mathematics, B.A . § This major has two possible emphases, the Liberal Arts and High § School Teaching. You may opt for this major, particularly the Liberal Arts track, if you are considering a double major. A degree in math shows employers that you have quantitative skills and that you can think logically to solve problems. Office of Admissions
Full Math Major Prep § Math 2A-B or 3A-B = Calculus 1 &2 § Math 4A-B = Linear Algebra and Differential Equations § Math 6A-B = Multivariable Calculus *Not needed for Math BA, but recommended § Math 8 (only two articulations exist for this course, currently) Office of Admissions
Mathematics Major Selection § Meet basic transfer selection criteria § Required major preparation for Mathematics B.A./B.S. and Mathematical Sciences B.S. majors must be completed before transferring to UCSB: First and second semester calculus § Required pre-major GPA of at least 2.75 § No individual grade lower than ‘C’ in major prep § Office of Admissions
Overall Theme § The department is requiring two semesters of coursework at a community college (or other institution) with letter grades of C or higher, and a 2.75 major prep GPA in those courses. Office of Admissions
AP and IB Exams § AP and IB exams alone will not satisfy major prep screening since the department wants to see two major prep college level courses on the academic record with letter grades § AP Calculus AB with 3 or higher = Math 3A § AP Calculus BC with 3 or higher = Math 3A and 3B § IB HL Math with 5 or higher = Math 3A and 3B § For the students partially or fully meeting the calculus requirement via exam, they will still need to have two major preparation math courses with letter grade C or better and 2.75 major prep GPA Office of Admissions
GPA Questions 1. Student took Calculus I and II and does not meet major prep GPA - in this case we can use advanced major prep math courses in GPA to help them reach a 2.75 2. What if a student does not have a GPA due to passing AP exams? – the student would need to take two major prep math courses to meet the GPA requirement 3. Can a student take a course for Pass/No Pass grading? – Only 1 Pass grade is okay, but the student would need to take two major prep math courses with a letter grade to meet the GPA requirement Office of Admissions
Other Notes § Business calculus courses are NOT appropriate for the math major. A student must complete 3A if they have taken business calculus. § Only two colleges have a current Math 8 articulation § Mt. San Antonio College § Santa Rosa Junior College § Advanced level courses (linear algebra, differential equations, multivariable calculus) can be used to help a student reach the 2.75 major prep GPA, but they will not hurt a student as long as they meet the 2.75 major prep GPA with calculus I and calculus II. § Multivariable calculus is often called calculus III at the community colleges Office of Admissions
Selective Majors at UCSB Biological Sciences: 1 year general chemistry with labs § Complete general biology sequence with labs § Minimum pre-major GPA = 2.70 with no individual grade lower than ‘C’ § Economics: Macroeconomics § Microeconomics § 1st & 2nd semester calculus § § Minimum pre-major GPA = 2.75 with no individual grade lower than ‘C’ Engineering: There are many required major preparation courses, which will vary depending on the program. Recommended major GPA = 3.6 and above Mathematics: beginning Fall 2019 Calculus series with pre-major GPA of 2.75 and no individual grade lower § than ‘C’ Office of Admissions

UC Transfer Basics Complete the following 7-course pattern by the end of the spring § term prior to fall enrollment at UC: 2 transferable courses in English composition with a C* or § higher; 1 transferable course in mathematics with a C* or higher; § 4 transferable college courses chosen from at least two of the § following subject areas with a C* or higher: arts and humanities (UC-H) § social and behavioral sciences (UC-B) § physical and biological sciences (UC-S) § Complete at least 60 semester (90 quarter) units of UC-transferable § credit Earn at least a 2.4 GPA in UC-transferable courses (2.8 for § nonresidents) Complete required major preparation § *Pass grades are acceptable if they are equivalent to a C (2.0) or higher
Major Preparation § Required vs. Recommended § Encourage students to start early to get ahead on graduation requirements Office of Admissions
CCC Evaluations: What we look for § Duplications § Limitations (PE/ESL/Math, etc) § Repeats § Sequencing (Chemistry, Math, and Language other than English are sequential) § Language of Instruction through 9 th grade § Use Assist.org Office of Admissions
Duplication § UC will not award credit for a repeat of the same course, if a C or better grade is earned –regardless of where it is taken § EXAMPLE: § A “C” in Music 100: Music Appreciation cannot be repeated with an “A” in Music 1: Music Appreciation Office of Admissions
