Growth & Development RDC Pivot ‐ 2018 Planted 5‐4‐18 Picture taken 5‐8‐10 Watered 3xs
Planting ‐ Dryland • ITS DRY, REAL DRY • Thoughts: – Be careful chasing moisture • Only place with good moisture is heavy cover strip tillage – (even with striping and planting in same pass) • 1.5” is deep, only go that deep if they have rotary hoe or no issue with compaction – DUSTING IN • Some say too early, I think depends upon situation – This is good time to plant irrigated land • Make sure they place seed in dry soil
Planting ‐ Irrigated • ITS DRY, REAL DRY • Thoughts: – Almost necessity to pre‐water – Once planting occurs, do not let soil dry out • Irrigations are required almost daily • Should be able to get stand in less than 4 days – Herbicide injury • You can’t have injury unless you have a stand!! • Get a stand is most important!! • Injury not always issue for yield!! • BUT, PRE‐WATER is best way to help and hope to limit to 1‐2 irrigations to get emergence (activate herbicide 24 hrs ahead of emergence)
Planting – Soil Compaction • Tips to assist emergence – Irrigate repeatedly, keeping good soil moisture – Rotary‐hoe • 2‐3 days after planting (if crusting) • Don’t run too late!!
