Radium Bore Hole Buried Radium Benches These were both located within the basement area of our Out-Patient Department, due to be demolished in Phase 3 - October 2014. The basement area housed our entire Medical Records department, some 7500 linear meters of records and approximately 25 staff.
In the mid 1980s an ex member of staff, who was in his late eighties, reported to our RPA that during the mid 1930s they had buried some Radium contaminated (benches/tables) in the basement area of the OPD. He provided a hand drawn sketch of the area where they were buried, unfortunately shortly after this he passed away. I was made aware of this issue in January 2003, three years prior to the PFI commencing.
March 2003 - GPR survey carried out in accessible areas (corridors), 9 targets found. July 2005 - Aurora brought in to carry out intrusive radiological survey, nothing found. January 2006 - PFI commenced, OPD building to be demolished in 2014. March 2006 – 150 sqm of medical records storage re-located to facilitate GPR and radiological survey. A number of areas were found to be contaminated with Radium-226. December 2006 – Contaminated areas cleared and made safe. Benche ches s not found! und!!
November 2013 – Medical Records moved out to allow archaeological dig and asbestos removal. February 2014 – GPR survey of remaining basement floor, 9 targets found April 2014 – Aurora carry out intrusive radiological survey, nothing found. June 2014 – Aurora & Zetica conducted a desk top review.
The contaminated benches never existed, it was the floor that had been contaminated then subsequently covered in concrete.
The OPD from ground floor up was clinically fully operational We had approximately 30 archaeologists on site carrying out a large scale excavation We were also conducting asbestos removal Aurora’s method statement was designed in conjunction with all of these parties
September 2014 – Aurora removed all of the contaminated flooring and made the area safe. October 4 th 2014 – Phase 3 was handed over to our construction contactor on time and clear of all contamination. 10 years rs & 10 months hs to complete ete
