  2. St Bartholomew's C of E First School ‘Roots to Grow and Wings to Fly’ As a proud Church school, we are rooted in love. We aspire to nurture and help our children flourish as respectful, compassionate citizens who seek to positively contribute to our local community and the world beyond. Our school family role model our Christian values of RESPECT, COMPASSION, TRUST, FORGIVENESS, HOPE, ASPIRATION and COURAGE. Our vision links to the parable of the mustard seed in Matthew 13: 31-32. For seeds to grow, they need solid, firm and strong roots. In this parable, Jesus explains that a mustard seed is one of the smallest seeds, yet when planted in the ground, it grows into one of the largest garden plants, so big, that birds can perch on its branches. From small beginnings, the kingdom of God has grown and spread across the whole earth. From small beginnings, we seek to give our children strong roots that allow them to thrive and flourish, giving them the wings to fly as they seek to experience ‘life in all its fullness’ as expressed in John 10: 10. These roots give our children the ‘WINGS TO FLY’. This Our children will be given the ‘ROOTS TO GROW’ means: though our Christian values and Golden Rules: 1. The ability to live in and value a diverse society 1. Stay Safe 2. Children realise their potential and seek to be the best 2. Try our best they can be 3. Be happy and believe in yourself 3. Having the confidence to make informed choices and 4. Always be sensible and helpful think for themselves 5. Respect our school and each other 4. Being aware of their own gifts and using them well 6. Treat each other kindly 5. Valuing the local community and world in which they 7. Strive to make our school outstanding live and making a positive contribution 6. Recognising and celebrating the good in everybody and everything

  3. Roots and Wings If I could give you many things, I’d give you gold and silver rings Of knowledge that I’ve gained with years The gift of smiling through the tears Confidence, courage, determination, Laughter and spirit and love of creation, Wrapped up in a box with a bow, I’d give To you these gifts to keep for as long as you live. “If I could give you just two things, One would be Roots, the other, Wings.” Roots, not to tie you to the ground, But to guide you to where your fulfilment is found The nourishing start, the firm foundation, The source of your inner determination. Wings to soar over obstacles, wings to fly free, Wings to glide to the heights of the best you can be. And when obstacles loom, from your Roots grows a hand Providing a strong, sturdy, safe place to land. I’d choose these two things for the gifts that are best, For with Roots and with Wings, you’ll find all the rest!

  7. Aims 2019/20 Academic Year Aims for the Board of Governors As a Governing Body, we seek to embrace our school vision of ‘Roots to Grow and Wings to Fly’, helping all members of our school community to have strong roots, that enable them to fly. Throughout this academic year, we aim to achieve this through setting the following three aims: 1. To continue being ‘visual’ to our whole school community, allowing everyone to fully understand who the governing body are, our roles and how we monitor, challenge and support the school. 2. To build on our link governor roles. This includes our key stage links, as well as the additional areas of individual responsibility we have, such as safeguarding, health and safety and Christian Distinctiveness. Through this, governors seek a deeper understanding of the data and what standards look like across the curriculum. 3. To be mindful of staff well-being and how we truly become the best school we can be for our children, families and staff in an energising, positive way without overburdening staff and loosing their amazing dedication and enthusiasm.

  8. Questions/Discussion • What could you look to implement in your governing body that will help you develop this area?
