• Most of them want to work • They think it will be easy • They think it will be exciting • They think they will be the boss pretty soon BUT • Finding supportive employers/staff and supervisors can be difficult • They don’t really know what they want to do • Some live in areas without a lot of supports and options • Travel issues can compromise their plans BUT WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? • Our kids do well- they sweep, sort, move stuff and generally don’t complain about starting at the bottom- they are eager to please and get good reports but it often ends there. • Our challenge is for our students to find meaningful employment- preferably before they leave school while they still have those supports in place.
• At this forum 2 years ago I attended the CTS presentation on the Ticket To Work program. • The element that jumped out at me as being of great value for our students was the opportunity to participate in the TTW interview process. • 6 students were initially involved in the interview process at Broadmeadows which was a most valuable albeit nerve wracking experience for them. • The experience was of great value to the group as they were interviewed by people that they had never met before and in an unfamiliar venue. • They faced the challenge of presenting themselves in a professional manner • All of the students received feedback from the panel about their interview performance- majority was positive.
• I also wrote each student a formal letter for their records detailing my thoughts on how they went. Dear Bryce, I was so impressed with the way you went in and had a go at the Ticket To Work interview process. Congratulations on being accepted into the program mate- brilliant. Only two students who were interviewed were highly recommended and you were one of them- you should be very proud of your effort on the day and how you present overall at school. The interview panel were very impressed with what you had to say and their review mentioned a big list of positives such as the work you have done with your father during holidays and your knowledge of cars. They took note of what you had to say about being a good team player, specifically how you help others out that need assistance and encouraging people. Your work in the canteen program was also mentioned. A key was the fact that you are aware of safety issues, both when travelling and in the workplace. The panel members commented in writing about your relaxed and confident manner but also how you are quiet and keen to get the job done. You came across as very motivated and keen to work. Again, well done. I am so proud of you in so many ways and you are going to do amazing things. Congratulations on having a go and doing such a great job- I know it wasn’t easy for you and you were very nervous but it is great experience to ha ve a go and to be highly recommended was a fantastic achievement. • The 6 students started with some SWL placements to get their feet wet. As a result things started to change in the School Community at Bullengarook:- *They started talking about work to other kids *They told the other kids that they got paid money *They received awards at assembly for doing SWL *They had articles written about them in the school newspaper ‘The Chronicle’ *and it provoked an unprecedented display of interest from the other students and families. My role as VCAL/VET Coordinator and Upper Secondary Sub School Leader became suddenly more complex as I was faced with a barrage of questions from students and staff. -Where is my job? (Nathan- never been remotely interested before). -Can we get a job at Bunnings for a non-verbal student to meet and greet customers using his communication device? - Can you help me with my resume so I can drop it in to local businesses as I am looking for a job. (Ask your teacher!!)
• The best part was that parents have now started to investigate their own SWL placements for their children at a variety of workplaces. I am now handing out numerous forms to be filled out and conducting WHS briefings for students prior to their placements. One student who has never talked at all about work and appeared to be more interested in solitary pursuits such as creating artwork and uploading animations walked in one morning to tell me that he had got himself a job at a local café (one less place for us to socialise at). His rationale behind it was to stop having his Mum have to pay for everything for him and it is better than just getting money from Centrelink- you earn it rather than have it given to you. The interview that I did with him was placed onto the front page of the chronicle to celebrate his achievement.
• Paris was successful in gaining a position in the Ticket to Work School Based Apprenticeship program. • She had to go through a formal Interview process to be accepted into the program • She works at Baringo Café 3 days a week from 9-2. • She travels independently from Woodend to Gisborne on the train to reach the Café. • The staff are amazing with her- they put her up on their facebook page to encourage people to come in to meet her on Mondays. • Yeah she dropped a couple of things and cut herself on a knife….haven’t we all. • She meets a trainer regularly to complete the theoretical portion of her Certificate 2 in retail studies. • It’s not easy….she was juggling work, study, her regular school program and getting ready for major events like a Debutante Ball and Interstate Camp, plus her RTO has changed along the way.
• We sent 4 more students through the Ticket To work interview process in 2016 and all 4 are actively involved in the process of looking for SWL placements and our ultimate goal for them an SBAT. • Once again the interview results were excellent and it is a great process to expose the students to. Parents were actively involved in taking the students to the interviews in Broadmeadows.
