Connecting People for Health November 2012
What we believe to be true: Government DOES NOT have all the answers! They are the single payer, administrator, regulator, monitor and evaluator (conflict of interest) We have a near monopoly that has put intolerable demands on government – monopolies, private and public have never worked
Ordinary people have some answers and want to be part of our healthcare solutions Credit unions are examples of people caring for themselves (financial health)
In 2007… Nova Scotia’s co-operatives and credit unions had a vision: Be a part of the healthcare solution by utilizing our own resources and expertise to meet our members’ needs
A captive audience… We represent 309,012 patients in Nova Scotia Focus on self help, self responsibility, ownership of solutions
Independent Market Research… 82% of Nova Scotians contacted said they wanted: Access to their Doctor online FAQ Site Prescription Renewals Online Appointment Bookings Personal Health Record Pre-approved medical library – education site Peer Chat & Support Space
They also said… If this product and services were available that day, they would pay for it that day When given a range of cost structures, they chose the high end
Clinicians said… Embrace “modern beneficial techniques” without being penalized in terms of money & time Reduce their administrative loads (online appointment bookings can free staff to do other things) To do “medicine” not “business” To provide quality, meaningful healthcare to their patients
Healthconnex was born… Canada’s first and only online clinic Canada’s first interactive patient portal
Virtual Clinic…
Today.. Over 500 paying patients in the clinic Two family practice offices providing e- consult services to their patients Own an MSI billing engine that is providing support to 1600 doctors across the province Plans for replication (18 million members across Canada)
Why are we different? Heath care solution that: Focused on Patients (not “big health” talking to “big health”) Focused on wellness & prevention Connected family physicians to their patients in new ways (that benefits them both) Use simply technology in the delivery of non-acute health care services Free up space in waiting rooms Free up use of emergency rooms for non acute issues
Why is this Important? We are a 100 year old NS business sector owned by the people who actually USE our services – THEY have the most at stake Like you, we care about our people; their health & success IS our business health & success Our business is owned by Nova Scotians Our investments & profits stay in Nova Scotia
Challenges.. Public policy Resistance to change Culture of “free healthcare services” at all levels, all costs Myth that we have universal & equal healthcare for all
We are Inventing the Future….. Alan Kay The best way to predict the future is to invent it!
