Student Mentoring And Real Tutoring (SMART) • Emily Chou, Ethan Lee, Anya Pathania • Our Mission Statement/Vision • “The S.M.A.R.T . Program aims to provide an educational opportunity for everyone, no matter the situation. By offering a free mentoring and tutoring service, our program can open up a portal to better places for those who are not as fortunate with opportunity. Dedicated volunteers not only help tutor children, but also double as role models. Education, guiding & motivating our children is the key to our nation’s future.”
SMART Tutoring Overview • Founded in the 2013-14 school year by WHS/Colina parents and students. • Math tutoring is held twice a week on the Colina campus for 1 hour per session for the entire school year. • Tutoring is free for Colina students, as high school tutors are volunteers. • SMART Tutoring is supported by Colina teachers, administrators and counselors who recruit students and provide supervision during the tutoring sessions.
SMART Tutoring Mentor Focus • Recruiting and training qualified high school tutors • Overseeing and supervising students and tutors during all sessions • Meeting quarterly with the Colina SMART Team in order to: • collaborate with math teachers regarding curriculum and student progress • evaluate and adjust tutor group assignments to best support students • annually review program and make needed changes
S.M.A.R.T Service • Over the past 4 years, we have served over 200 of Colina Middle School’s 8th grade students primarily enrolled in Algebra 1CP and Math 8CP . • Through the S.M.A.R.T . program, many of our students showed improvement of grades, study skills, and consistent homework completion. • Through the program, a number of students became eligible to culminate to a comprehensive high school without attending Summer School. • Each student’s progress is reviewed quarterly by SMART tutors and math teachers to ensure they are receiving the best possible support. • SmartColina Website: http://ethan2017286.wixsite.com/smartcolina
