  4. The Wheel | Europe for Citizens: Town Twinning EUROPE FOR CITIZENS HELPS PROMOTE UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN THE UNION AND ITS CITIZENS, DEEPENING OUR AWARENESS OF WHAT IT MEANS TO BE EUROPEAN AND DEVELOPING A SENSE OF EUROPEAN IDENTITY.

  5. The Wheel | Europe for Citizens: Town Twinning HOW DOES THE PROGRAMME ACHIEVE ITS OBJECTIVE? Strand 1: European Remembrance • Invites reflection on European history and on common values, e.g. projects commemorating a date in history or reflecting on the causes of totalitarian regimes. Strand 2: Democratic Engagement and Civic Participation • Encourages the involvement of citizens and civil society organisations in debate and discussion of European policy- making & priorities.

  11. The Wheel | Europe for Citizens: Town Twinning TOWN TWINNING IS MORE THAN THE CURRENT PERCEPTION While projects by Town Twinning Committees are an important part of the programme, there is so much more unexploited potential. Town Twinning can be used as an opportunity for any non- profit organisation to invite EU visitors over for a series of events. The funding is small so it is ideal for festivals, that would be running events anyway, or for organisations looking to build a European network to pave the way for bigger, more ambitious projects.

  12. The Wheel | Europe for Citizens: Town Twinning THE BARE BONES OF IT… What is it? A minimum of 25 European visitors from at least one other EU country are hosted in the applicant town for a minimum of 3 days. Who is it for? Any non-profit making entity can apply with a letter from their local authority. What will it fund? Activities in line with the programme priorities

  13. The Wheel | Europe for Citizens: Town Twinning PRIORITIES • Debating the future of Europe and challenging Euroscepticism • Promoting solidarity in times of crisis • Fostering intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding and combating stigmatisation of migrants and minority groups • European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 NOTE: Emphasise the “European dimension”, citizens & community
