Mitigation - Greenhouse Gas Report Greenhouse gas reduction Average annual GHG strategy reductions (tons CO2e) Alternatives to conventional 47,236 concrete Alternatives to conventional 61,475 asphalt Total – materials, concrete and 108,711 pavement strategies Roadway lighting 38,819 Alternative fuels and vehicles 2,182 Total – operations and 41,001 maintenance strategies Renewable energy projects 1,391 Building energy and water 3,511 efficiency Workplace commute programs 6,465 Total – facilities and 11,367 administration strategies TOTAL 161,079
Mitigation - Climate Registry Reporting Caltrans has reported operational GHG emissions to the Climate Registry since 2007 • From 2010 to 2017, Caltrans had a 45% decrease in total GHG emissions • Since 2010, Caltrans has reduced emissions by 96.301 metric tons of CO2e
Process For Building a Sustainable and Efficient Transportation System Phase I – Current vulnerability assessments Phase II – Adaptation Strategies
Climate Change Vulnerability Assessments Caltrans is conducting vulnerability assessments statewide in all 12 Caltrans Districts • Assessments will identify state highway infrastructure vulnerable to: – Sea Level Rise – Storm Surge – Coastal Bluff Erosion – Extreme Heat – Precipitation Changes – Wildfires
District Vulnerability Assessments All 12 Caltrans Districts will receive: Summary Report Technical Report On-line viewer Tool • Overview of the natural • Background on data used to • Posted online, the tool environment and develop reports allows users to toggle transportation infrastructure stressors on and off to • Vulnerability assessment visualize locations of the • Description of the interaction methodology stressors of the transportation system and identified stressors
Example Summary Report Pages Pre and post wildfire adaptation Reports contain information and data specific to each District in numerous visual formats
Climate Change Vulnerability Assessments Delivery Schedule District 4 •August 2017 Districts 2 and 6 •By Spring 2018 Districts 8 and 11 •By Summer 2018 District 3, 9, and 10 •By Winter 2018 District 1 and 5 •By Winter 2018, pending USGS data
Adaptation: Climate Action Report Task 3 Task 2 Task 1 Given the findings from Identify implementable Update the 2013 the vulnerability agency-wide adaptation “Caltrans Activities to assessments, identify strategies. Address Climate assets that should Change” report prioritize adaptation implementation. Updated report will include newly Develop adaptation identified greenhouse reports for each District gas reductions, and highlight successful mitigation efforts
