Breastfeeding - A climate-smart decision The production, packaging, distribution and preparation processes of milk formulae, as with most processed food production, requires energy. Milk formula production is an important source of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions I ncreasing use of unnecessary follow-on and toddler milk formulas aggravate the problem Direct breastfeeding and hand expression of breastmilk are efficient in terms of reducing waste and saving energy and other resources F a m i l y H e a l t h B u r e a u – M i n i s t r y o f H e a l t h , N u t r i t i o n & I n d i g e n o u s M e d i c i n e

Breastfeeding Feasible for all For busy mothers, working mothers A main reason for mothers to resort to other types of feeding Myths created for generations by unethical marketing NOT due to a physiological requirement Note - Toddler milks unnecessary and can be unsuitable to the nutrition of young children (WHO) F a m i l y H e a l t h B u r e a u – M i n i s t r y o f H e a l t h , N u t r i t i o n & I n d i g e n o u s M e d i c i n e
Exagg ggerated need for formula milk ilk largely created by mil ilk food in industry ry is is la Myth 1 - BF is difficult & Formula feeding easy • Easy to breastfeed & easy to feed with expressed BM Inform • Skilled & timely support needed to initiate and continue BF properly Myth 2 - A lot of milk is still needed after starting CF • Practice age appropriate breastfeeding Inform Myth 3 - A mother cannot produce adequate milk when the baby is growing • Age appropriate breastfeeding does not require a lot of breast milk or a number of feeds Inform • A mother CAN produce breastmilk to match the breastfeeding demand – even to feed more than one baby (multiple births..)
