Boxcryptor Presentation by Damien Murphy ICB Monthly Meeting 20 March 2018
Boxcryptor is file-encryption software designed and created specifically for cloud use, with support for all major cloud-storage providers.
How does it work? Step 1: You need to have some files stored somewhere in the cloud e.g. Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, iCloud
Step 2: Download the Boxcryptor software
Online help is relatively easy to follow
Step 3: Create a Boxcryptor Account Start Boxcryptor . Click on create account . Follow the wizard to finish the account creation. Create a password that you can remember. Boxcryptor is zero knowledge encryption software, therefore they cannot restore your password!!!
Step 4: Once installed you should see the Boxcryptor icon in Windows Explorer N.B. At this point Boxcryptor is not running (this is controlled by you in settings)
Step 5: Run Boxcryptor – you decide if this is done automatically or if a password is required each time etc. Now you will see the “virtual” drive X that is created by Boxcryptor - this is called “mounting” a drive
If you expand the X Drive you will see that Boxcryptor has detected your cloud storage, plus removable devices
As a backup you can use any file backup software e.g. FreeFileSync to regularly back up the unencrypted versions of all your files from X Drive to a local source
