French Immersion is: ench Immersion is:  An opportunity to become bilingual while achieving all the outcomes of the regular curricula, developed by Manitoba Education.  A program that aims to foster an awareness and an appreciation of the French language and culture. There is no expectation that parents speak or understand French. Communication with home is in English.

W HA HAT RESEARCH ESEARCH TELLS ELLS US US  Academic Achievement  French language French Immersion model produces functional proficiency in French in all four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  English language French Immersion learners experience no disadvantage in their English language skills because language transfers during learning.

W HA HAT RESEARCH ESEARCH TELLS ELLS US US  Learning a second language increases problem solving skills and heightens creativity  It improves memory and self-discipline  It expands cultural horizons and adds a new dimension to learning.  First language skills can be enhanced by a second language.  It is a door to the future, creating opportunities for travel, study and an advantage in an increasingly competitive and global workplace.

WHA WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE IT LOOKS LIKE  All subjects are taught in French.  All support staff speak French.  Teachers use many techniques to help students understand their second language.  Children respond in English in the beginning, then begin to use French words in their English sentences. Eventually, they are able to speak in full sentences.  English Language Arts is introduced in Grade 2.

  9. W HO END É COLE COLE G UY OT ? HO CAN ATTEND UYOT There are 2 criteria for students who are automatically accepted at École Guyot.  Students who will be 5 years old by Dec. 31st, 2017. (Born on or before December 31, 2012)  Family resides in our catchment area (specific addresses within Southdale, Island Lakes & Royalwood)

  19. T RANSPOR RANSPORTATION ION  The School Division determines a student’s eligibility for transportation with respect to provincial funding guidelines. The Province provides transportation support for students in Kindergarten to Grade 6 attending their designated school with more than 1.6 kilometres to walk in order to reach the school.  All noon-hour Kindergarten bus students must be met by a parent or guardian at the bus stop.

  26. C AN AN WE WE SELECT SELECT MORNING MORNING OR TEN ? AFTERNOON AFTERNOON KINDERGAR INDERGARTEN  You can indicate your preference on the registration form.  Morning or afternoon placement depends on a number of factors, including bus transportation and daycare facilities.  We will consult parents in April and May with respect to placement needs.  Parents will be informed of final placement in June.

  27. W HA ARE ? HAT ABOUT UT DAYCARE The South Winnipeg YMCA/YWCA operates a Before and After School program in our building. The program has several benefits:  Students don’t have to leave the school.  Students are grouped with children from their class.  Students can take part in assemblies that take place during the other half of the school day.  Parents have more opportunity to interact with school staff. A list of daycares in our neighbourhood can be found in the registration package.

OW WILL WILL MY MY CHILD CHILD LEARN LEARN FRENCH Many parents wonder how their child will understand a teacher who speaks in French when their son/daughter doesn’t understand French. They learn to speak French in much the same way they learned to speak English: listening and watching, tone of voice, gestures, pointing, guessing, visual clues (pictures), etc...

EDUCATION EDUC  Yes, over 30 years in Canada and recognized globally as a quality second language acquisition program.  Will graduate with a Grade 12 French Immersion diploma which officially recognizes the graduate as bilingual (Collège Béliveau & Collège Jeanne-Sauvé – two French Immersion High Schools in the division).

TO THOSE TO THOSE IN THE NGLISH PROGRAM  Yes, many studies and many divisional & provincial results for the last 20 years indicate without a doubt that the skills are equal to or better than those in the English stream.

NGLISH POST POST SECONDAR ARY INSTITUTION  T ransition is not a problem as they are now bilingual and the brain can easily make the transition.  In terms of scientific language, it is derived from Greek & Latin and is very similar in either language.  Many former students pursued post-secondary studies (university, college, vocational programs) and are very successful.
