  2. What is the Baby Friendly Initiative? • The Baby - Friendly Initiative™ (BFI) is a joint global campaign of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nation’s Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The initiative provides a plan to protect, promote and support breastfeeding. • The BFI provides guidelines for optimal care within health services for all babies and mothers.

  3. How does BFI fit with the new Public Heath Standards? Child Health • Assessment and surveillance – Conduct epidemiological analysis of surveillance data in the area of: breastfeeding, healthy eating, healthy weights, growth and development and oral health. • Promotion and Policy Development – Implement health policies and the creation or enhancement of supportive environment to address: breastfeeding, healthy eating, healthy weights, growth and development and oral health.

  8. Step 1 Have a written breastfeeding policy that is routinely communicated to all staff and volunteers.

  9. Step 2 Train all health professionals in the knowledge and skills necessary to implement the breastfeeding policy.

  10. Step 3 Inform pregnant women and their families about the benefits and management of breastfeeding.

  11. Step 4 Support mothers to establish and maintain exclusive breastfeeding for six months.

  12. Step 5 Encourage sustained breastfeeding beyond six months with appropriate introduction of complementary foods.

  13. Step 6 Provide a welcoming atmosphere for breastfeeding families.

  14. Step 7 Promote collaboration between health care providers, breastfeeding support groups and the local community.
