  4. History Autumn 2006 / SIFA How can RFID be used? (package-, pallet- and freight unit levels as well as intermodal) Intermodal business case formed by Stena Line and Schenker, identifying/tracing/positioning of freight units. Winter & Spring 2007 / SIFA Pre-study investigating the Stena/Schenker business case, resulting in a report showing technical solutions and efficiency improvements. Autumn 2007 Stena/Schenker business case communicated with Prof. Dr. Jan Tore Pedersen and considered as very interesting for the coming FP7 e-Freight project. Winter 2008 Stena/Schenker business case reviewed with DSV and DHL together with GS1 Sweden, Savi and Litium Mobile solutions with the objective to establish a common view of the business values and with a proposed next step start a deeper investigation in co- operation. A unique meeting, but with a sad and expected result…co - operation doesn’t come easy in the transport business. => Bigger initiatives like EU-funded projects are really a must for progress . Spring-autumn 2008 Volvo Technology contacts Stena Line and wants to run an intermodal demonstrator called Port Pilot . Volvo, Stena Line, DSV, Wackfelts and Swedish Customs runs the project during November/December and evaluates estimated security and efficiency improvements on trailers exported on the Stena Line route Gothenburg – Travemünde. Spring 2009 Stena/Schenker business case taken up as BC1 within the FP7 e-Freight project with the beneficiaries Stena Line, Schenker and DSV. 4

  5. SIFA pre-study • Objective to investigate RFID as a tool for identifying transport units in quay areas and which effects this will give to the ferry operators, their customers and other stakeholders • Analysis mainly based on interviews with on-site staff • High-level pre-study results: - manual resource reduction by check-in/out automation - faster check-in/out - increased freedom of action by 24-hour secured port area availability - increased security by automatic identification and 24h availability - increased traceability by detecting RFID-events in the ferry operation chain => Interesting for Stena Line? – YES! 5

  6. Port Pilot • Project driven within the Security Arena program (Lindholmen Science Park) by Volvo Technology, financed mainly by MSB - the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency • Active Stakeholders: Swedish customs, Volvo, Stena Line, DSV and Wackfelts Åkeri (haulier) Objective • Test concepts for more secure and efficient intermodal chains by adding technical solutions and make information visible between the different transport actors and systems, included public safety authorities like the swedish customs Results • Port Pilot film: < Port pilot_Tema 1 Security Arena_2008_ENG_Media Player.wmv > 6

  7. Port Pilot - results • Saved 10 minutes (average) for every unit to be dropped/ collected by automatic port entrance (non-secured statistics) • Freight unit under continuous observation (driver never leaves the vehicle. Existing manual check-in makes cargo un- observed for an average 8½ minutes) • No driver administration / time slack. In some cases, 30 minutes were spent on administrative/unspecified tasks between port arrival and check-in by driver inside truck • Time-defined check-in/check-out process (today undefined with unknown waiting of administrative reasons, a BIG difference for forwarders and hauliers) • Port area parking identification. Ability to keep trace of where freight units have been parked by locating RFID responses • New events to be communicated: Arrived port, Boarded/ Loaded, Unloaded, Parked, Collected/Left port 7

  8. e-Freight/FP7 expectations • Make extensive publicity for active stakeholders as leaders in making a better Europe - in terms of less congestions, better environment and increased European competiveness Prove political conviction by meeting business requirements, taking the full financial risk • for active pioneer stakeholder participation • Full up-taking of BC1 business requirements for a useful and scalable e-Freight platform Establish, promote, evaluate, maintain and further develop the e-Freight message • standard as the natural one to be used within the European community and used by all transport modes E-Freight message standard to be consolidated with existing standards like Pharos and • the coming GS1 LIM (GS1 Logistic Interoperability Model) • Establish an RFID standard for freight unit identification, in line with AEO and other ongoing initiatives Work towards a paper-free transport Europe by tight and continuous processing within the • EU commission, using the e-Freight platform as an enabler 8
