  2.  Big transition from 3 rd Grade  Holding the students accountable  High expectations  Working towards independence and less teacher questions  Parent support at home for responsibility – encourage ownership and organization…we are a team!

  3.  Reading: Guided reading, Making Meaning (focused mini- lessons), Individualized Daily Reading (IDR) with reading responses, MyOn  Word study (related to spelling): word work within reading workshop , discussions within guided reading (Grading: How are they spelling within their writing?)  Writing: The Writing Process, writer’s notebooks, student self-assessment, and teacher assessment writing rubrics, google app comments

  4. Social Studies: SOL Year • Virginia studies all year • Interactive Notebooks • Chapter Tests by Unit: Study information from notebooks & study guides that come one week before the test – keep and use to study for SOL! • Beginning to incorporate Project Based Assessments • Individual/Group Projects • Camp Flintlock and Richmond

  5. Math: SOL Year Homework at least twice a week - except Fridays (until SOL review) – important to continue practicing math facts throughout the school year Unit Tests and exit tickets - Differentiation (all levels being taught) – - Workshop model - guided math, Smartboard use, movement throughout classroom, self-discovery, discussion, think pair share, journal reflections, number talks, games

Science/Health • VA Ecosystems; Weather and Beyond; Just Do It! including Forces of Motion, Solar System, and Plants; Magnetism and Electricity - Lots of fun experiments! • Personal & Community, Injury Violence & Prevention, Human Growth and Development, Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs, Emotional and Social Health • Class Work (Individual and Groups) • Projects (Done in class)

  9.  LRES is beginning to implement a new behavior and wellness system called the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).  Responsive Classroom is used in all 4 th grade classrooms.

  10.  Birthdays: This year we will celebrate student birthdays within the classroom from a menu of options provided from your child’s teacher  Medication – the clinic is open during open house today and tomorrow to check in any medications  Volunteering: Wednesday Folders, Field Trips, Party Helpers, Camp Flintlock  Field Trips: Kennedy Center and Richmond

  11.  Attendance – please call or email the attendance line for absences by 9:15 AM ▪ 703-426-3737 ▪ Laurelridgees.attendance@fcps.edu  Students are responsible for talking to their teacher about any missed work due to absences.  Please inform teachers and the school about extended absences. Please encourage your student to advocate for themselves to get their missing work.

  12.  Assignment Notebooks  Homework folders  Generally math and reading  40 minutes and STOP!  Beneficial websites can be used for extra practice (Khan Academy and Sheppard Software)
