  2. TONIGHT…. • I will: – Introduce myself – Review the nuts and bolts of 5 th grade – Walk through a day in the life of a 5 th grader

  3. COMMUNICATION • Communication – Encourage students to talk with teachers – Email List • Chrome Books – All classrooms abide by MCPS & Westbrook’s guidelines for proper Chrome Book use. Digital Citizenship contract has been signed by all 5 th grade students & parents .

  4. COMMUNICATION and HOMEWORK • Large Binder---Check parent section every night; everything else stays in the binder. – Homework section is student’s responsibility. Teachers are modeling use of student planners. – The Weekly Assignment Chart, WAC, is sent home every Monday and includes parent reminders about important dates. It also always includes the Math indicators for the week. – Graded work will be sent home once per week in a folder (or stamped for signature). Please sign and return folder.

  5. POLICIES • Volunteer Policies- Volunteers must complete MCPS CAN (Child Abuse & Neglect) Online Training before they are able to volunteer in MCPS schools (or go on field trips). • Extended Field Trip Volunteers- must also be fingerprinted.

  6. HOMEWORK • Homework – Provide faded support for your fifth grader – Nightly (50 minutes maximum. NO weekend homework is assigned). • Independent reading (30 minutes). • One written response per week- Assignment is on the Weekly Assignment Chart (WAC). Please stress the importance that they not wait until Thursday night to begin the written response. • Nearly nightly Math assignments • Parents should sign Weekly Assignment Chart (WAC) which due on Friday. • Encourage students to leave WAC in binder so that no work is lost. – Long-term Projects: TBD – Occasional additional assignments (Missed classwork done while at instrumental music etc.).

  7. MIDDLE SCHOOL PLACEMENTS • Westland Course Placements – Usually completed in late January, early February – The Westland Guidance department is your point of contact – Westland will have a counselor visit our students at Westbrook to go over the registration process. – Please note that Westbrook teachers can only make recommendations regarding Digital Literacy and Math placement that corresponds with your child’s MAP scores and current Math course. – Only a parent can request that their child begin taking a foreign language in 6 th grade. Westbrook teachers are not able to place a student • Private School – We’re happy to help, but please respect the timeframe that is needed to complete recommendations. Please also provide a list of schools to us. – Contact the main office for transcript requests.

  8. Curriculum - Reading • Literature – Students read from a variety of genres – Emphasis is on critical thinking, not literal comprehension • Informational – Often integrated with Science and Social Studies units – Emphasis on research • Vocabulary

  9. Curriculum - Writing • Process, Production, and Research – Habits of good writers • Narrative • Informational • Opinion • Use of Language • We’re also exploring multimedia presentations & public speaking.

  10. CURRICULUM – MEDIA CENTER • Media – Book exchange weekly – Research time is flexible based upon writing projects

Curriculum- Math • Math 5- Lewis/Campbell & Elie • Rotations for all classes- Whole Class & Small Groups • Rotations include: Writing About Math, Math By Myself, Math With Someone – MP1- multiplying using standard algorithm, volume, decimals, (comparing, adding & subtracting) – MP2- division of a 4 digit by 2 digit number, equivalent fractions, addition, subtraction and multiplication of fractions – MP3- multiplication of fractions and mixed numbers, division of whole numbers by fractions, measurement – MP4- multiply and divide decimals to hundredths, geometry (2-dimensional figures), graphing • Enrichment opportunities for those that master content

Curriculum- Math • Math 5/6- McNelis – Second half of 5 th grade content & All of 6 th grade content • Rotations for all class- Whole Class & Small Groups • Rotations include: Writing About Math, Math By Myself, Math With Someone – MP1- Multiplication & Division with Fractions, Areas of Rectangles (including fractional lengths), Multiplication & Division of Decimals to the Hundredths – MP2- Ratios & Rates (Ratios as Fractions, Decimals & Percent), Multiplication & Division of Fractions and Decimals – MP3- Positive & Negative Integers, Graphing Coordinates, Absolute Value, Algebraic Equations, Order of Operations – MP4- Area & Volume (triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons), Relationships between Variables, Analyzing Data & Statistics, Multiplication & Division of Decimals • Enrichment opportunities for those that master content

Curriculum- Health • Responsive Classroom – Includes class meetings, morning meetings & monthly lessons from Mrs. Pickle • Integrated into Science and Social Studies – Addresses social, emotional, and physical well-being • Spring 2018 (More information & parent meeting will follow) – Family Life- discussion of puberty – Disease Prevention and Control

  15. Curriculum- Social Studies • Economic systems/Political policies – during Revolutionary War • Changes in government during the creation of the United States • Changes in physical and human characteristics and settlement patterns • Financial Literacy

Grade 5 Learning Skills • Each marking period, students will receive letter grades (A, B, C, D)for the following: • Collaborates with others. • Completes learning tasks. • Demonstrates creative thinking skills. • Demonstrates critical thinking skills. • Demonstrates effort, motivation, and persistence. • Engages/maintains attention to learning task. • Follows oral and written directions.

  17. Grade 5 Report Card • Each marking period, 5 th grade students will receive letter grades (A, B, C, D) in assessed areas. Grade Description • Evidence demonstrates a full understanding of content, concept or skill. A • Errors or omissions are absent or do not impact understanding. • Evidence demonstrates general understanding of content, concept or B skill with minimal support. • Errors or omissions may impact understanding. • Evidence demonstrates some understanding of content, concept or skill C with some support. • Errors or omissions impact understanding. • D Evidence demonstrates limited or minimal understanding of content, concept and skill with significant support. • Errors or omissions are critical and impact understanding.

  18. Instrumental Music • Will be held on Thursday every week. • Students will have the schedule posted in the classroom and in their planner. It is their responsibility to go at their designated time. • Students are responsible for any work that is missed while out of the classroom.
