  6. Grant Application Framework The entire Grant Application Framework can be downloaded from the Lenz web site under Webinar #4. There are four sections to the Grant Application Framework. The project background is what we will work with at SMC. The rest can be completed after SMC: A. Applicant Information B. Organizational Backgrounds C.   8. Grant Application Framework B. Organizational Background 1. Objectives, purposes and brief history of each organization 2. Description of current services offered 3. Current programs and accomplishments, emphasizing achievements of the recent past 4. Geographic areas served 5. Organization’s clients, targeted populations 6. Background on the staff as well as skills and expertise 7. Board members and their resumes 8. Information concerning the organizations’ reputation in the communities in which they serve 9. All organizations’ balance sheets and budgets and a summary of its fiscal management practices

How the project contributes to the organizations’ overall missions 3. Description of any special features of the project, such as whether it is innovative, promotes diversity or serves an underserved population, or something which makes your project standout as distinctive 4. Statement of the need being served 5. Anticipated length of the project 6. Statement of the population that you plan to serve and how this population will benefit from the project

Percentage of funds the Lenz Foundation is being asked to contribute to the particular program or project and statement of how additional funding will be obtained 9. Expense budget for the project 10. Proposed staffing pattern for the project and the names and titles of the individuals who will direct the project 11. How the final business plan and written agreements between the collaborating organizations will be created

  12. Grant Application Framework Three drafts need to be prepared prior to your arrival at Shambhala: 1. A written draft of the section “Project Background” 2. A PowerPoint summary of the “Project Background” ( 20 minutes in length) 3. A one-page summary/handout (details on next page)

Grant Application Framework A one-page summary/handout which includes: • The project name • The partner organizations involved • The project goals • Grant request • How the project contributes to the Lenz Foundation mission (see website) • How it can be measurable and scalable, who is being served and how you plan to engage other funders

Grant Application Process There are three streams of content for the retreat at SMC: 1) Working on and presenting proposals 2) Further tools and skills for collaboration (implementation, decision making, commitments, accountability and conflict management and resolution) 3) Meditation, embodiment practice, and dialogue The latter two will be interwoven throughout Saturday and Sunday

Grant Application Process Thursday, June 5th Participants arrive at SMC Participants who are not submitting a grant proposal by 5:30 PM are encouraged to attend on Reception and dinner at Thursday and Friday to 6:30 PM continue learning about collaboration and to assist others; however if they wish they can arrive on Friday before dinner

  16. Grant Application Process Friday, June 6th • Participants work primarily with their collaboration partners to finalize the PowerPoint, the one-page handout, and the section of the grant, “Project Background.” • Printers, paper and projectors will be provided. • Lenz Foundation staff and PI consultants will be on hand to assist in any way. • If time, we will work in small “Peer Coaching Groups” to get feedback from others.

  17. Grant Application Process Saturday, June 7th • Depending on the number of grants, we will most likely divide the total group into two working groups • Each proposal team will have approximately 40 minutes to both present their proposal via PowerPoint and the one-page handout and get feedback from the group on how to “make it better still.” Assume a 20 -minute presentation and 20 minutes of feedback • The proposal team will then have time to rework their presentation and documents.

  18. Grant Application Process Sunday, June 8th • Each team will present their final PowerPoint presentation along with the one-page handout to the entire group, which includes the Selection Committee. • Selection Committee begins meeting at 4:30 PM on Sunday and they will need only the Project Background and the one- page Summary.

  20. Grant Application Process Selection Committee • Will meet Sunday from 5:00 – 9:30 PM and will dialogue about the various grants and also fill out a numerical matrix, based on criteria from the Lenz Foundation and from Garrison. Grant recipients will be notified by the Lenz Foundation Board after the retreat.

  22. Grant Making Criteria (From Lenz Board at Garrison) 1. Can only be given to 501(c)(3) organizations but partners may include others 2. Must further principles of Buddhism – mindfulness and meditation 3. Must benefit populations of North America (primarily the US) 4. Must be administered in accordance with financial and legal requirements of the Lenz Foundation (please see website for specifics) 5. Must include at least 2 organizations Must include other funding sources (if not revenue neutral) 6. 7. Must be willing to participate in soliciting additional funding for grant pool (with Lenz Board)
