  1. An Overview of the Key Information Set (KIS) Louise Walmsley Head of Teaching and Learning Support Office 22 March 2012

  2. Objectives of this session • To raise awareness of the KIS among staff. • Provide information on the role of the ‘KIS Champion’ and data collation requirements. • Communicate important dates.

  3. What is a KIS? • Standard set of data for each UG programme marketed by an HEI. • A programme is anything longer than one year FTE. • Compiled from data supplied by the institution, National Student Survey (NSS), Destination of Leavers from HE (DLHE). • Compiled by HEFCE (later HESA). • Published on HEI’s website via a ‘KIS widget’ and available via UCAS. • Also available to HE sector and private organizations for ‘Go Compare’ use. • Data updated regularly and will be part of QAA audit.

  4. Content of the KIS The KIS contains areas of information that students have identified as useful: • accommodation costs (institution) • programme information (institution) • financial information, such as fees (institution/UCAS) • professional accreditation information (institution) • student satisfaction (NSS) • employment and salary data (DLHE) • students' union information (NUS) Most of these data are supposed to be ‘readily available’…

  5. Programme information • Teaching and learning methods • Assessment methods • Hours spent on scheduled teaching and learning activity • Professional accreditation Teaching, learning and assessment information is required for each year of a programme

  6. More about the KIS • The KIS published in September 2012 will be for programmes planned for 2013-14. • The only exceptions are short courses (one year full-time equivalent or less), postgraduate programmes, programmes delivered wholly overseas, and closed programmes. • Not a contractual document but ‘indicative’ • All UK HEIs are participating.

  7. What does a KIS look like?

  8. Timescale March 12 Submission system opens • • July 2012 HEFCE adds NSS and DLHE 2012 data • Aug 2012 Sign-off by institution • Sep 2012 Institutions preview new HEFCE website/widgets • Sep 2012 New HEFCE website goes live Sep 2012 KIS widgets to be embedded in all HEI web pages • • Sep 2012 UCAS includes KIS data in its courses website • Oct 2012 KIS system re-opens for updates (updates needed to confirm fees, deal with new/closed programmes etc.)
