  9. Specific achievement highlights • Outputs consultancy projects partly based on their AfriCLP work – 17 Journal papers – 12 proposals funded partly or – 11 Book chapters whole based on AfriCLP data – 2 books – AfriCLP was requested by – 1 Conference paper IDRC for a proposal to extend – X Technical papers AfriCLP to Francophone WA – 1 Policy publication – Videos & Blogposts • Upward mobility • Mentorship – 2 fellows have applied for PhD scholarship with their mentor. – Several fellows were selected Process is not yet concluded to mentor others – > 5 fellows were promoted or • Networking & collaboration moved to new roles in other – Several fellows have created organizations partnerships partly on the • Recognition/award strength of AfriCLP – 1 fellow was awarded the best – At least 2 fellows were 2018 scientist in his accepted into other programs organization or fellowships partly on the strength of AfriCLP • Participation in IPCC • New projects – 2 fellows were selected as expert reviewers for AR6 chaps – At least 3 fellows received

  12. Lessons and conclusions • Female fellows – Difficult to recruit female CC fellows – IDRC to consider funding a project to grow female CC leadership cap. • Recording capacity building by Fellows – Noted that Fellows get involved in many capacity building activities but no mechanisms to keep track of them – Project to develop an intuitive platform to help Fellows record their leadership capacity growth as it happens • CC adaptation capacity – Key to lasting CC adaptation capacity building in Africa = strengthening & sustaining the emerging human/institutional networks – Leadership capacity building needs to be sustained • The African CC Network – AfriCLP, working with ACCFP, has created the Africa Climate Change Network (ACCN) – A COP network of African CC experts – But it it has not taken off! – Funded projects and Secretariat to operationalize and sustain the network

  13. Measuring leadership capacity 6 BMC Family Practice 4 capacity development levels 6 principles of capacity building Research Capacity Building Cooke’s RCB Framework – Used for LC at Individual Level (page number not for citation purposes)

  14. Leadership model for CC Adaptation Leadership Locus of Leadership Tasks Functions Leadership Political- Positional • develop, communicate and monitor Admini- leaders the realization of a shared vision on strative (elected) climate adaptation politicians) • generate and allocate necessary &/or public resources for climate adaptation managers Adaptive Complex • N/A (Adaptive function is an Adaptive emergent property of the CAS) System (CAS) Enabling Positional • allow for and stimulate a variety of leaders adaptation strategies and options • create a sense of urgency Key individuals • insert adaptive tension • Sponsors • foster interaction Disse- • insert newly developed ideas (within • Boundary Meijerink & Stiller mination the CAS) into the network of spanners • Champions positional leaders (2011) framework • get newly developed ideas accepted • Policy Entre- Conne- • promote problems and mobilize preneurs ctive actors to search for solutions Used to measure LC • bring people together/agree on a in individuals collaborative strategy • stimulate multiple action influencing the options/working together/building other levels in trust and legitimacy • forge agreement/move to Cooke’s framework action/implement strategies
