WHAT ISSUES DOES SHAB ADDRESS? • Improving students’ health • Working to understand and mitigate high rates of chronic disease among APS students (asthma, severe allergic reactions, and obesity) • Ensuring sufficient physical activity and outdoor play • Emphasizing the importance of healthy eating and adequate sleep • Factors that affect socio-emotional well-being 3

Action Items Food Allergy Guidelines • Translate the guidelines into Spanish • Print copies and distribute to schools and programs • Create a dedicated page on the APS website Hand-Washing Policy • Update the APS handbook • Send messages to staff and parents 3 times per year • Instruction on hand-washing and how to integrate it throughout the busy school day • Implement designs in school construction and remodeling efforts 5

Action Items Air Quality - Bus and Automobile Idling • Declare APS a No-Idle District • Educate parents about the negative impact of idling • Promote zero tolerance for APS bus drivers violating the 5-minute idling limit • Approve funding for replacement of old school buses or retrofitting of older buses Indoor Air Quality • Educate parents and staff about the hazards of scented products 6
