The Process • Search committee (4 ‐ 5 folks) • “Charge” by Dean/Chair based on need • Job announcement developed and disseminated (words matter!) • Applications received (takes time) are screened (takes more time) • Committee scores and discusses (for “fit”) top applicants • Phone/Skype interviews ~5 ‐ 7 individuals • Campus visits ~2 ‐ 3 individuals • Robust itinerary (meetings: faculty, students, administrators, other stakeholders)– dinner meeting(s) • Input from stakeholders to search committee • Search committee recommendation to Chair/Dean • Decision  Negotiations

Negotiating a salary • Nerve ‐ racking for those lacking experience • Be informed • Review salaries survey • Public universities typically have publically available salaries • $alaries vary by: • School (e.g., Medicine, Public Health, Business) • Expertise/specialty (Outcomes research, qualitative methods, economics) • Job expectations (course load, funding expectations) • Money matters, but less so than other important aspects in a first academic job • Protected time • Mentorship availability and commitments • Organizational culture and norms are a “fit” • Trust of supervisor, leadership
