  1. About Medicine Hat Named after a Blackfoot legend, the city now has a population of just over 60,000 and boosts more days of sunshine than any other city in Canada. In 1883, the CPR stopped to build a bridge across the South Saskatchewan River and a tent town was born – the birth of Medicine Hat. In searching for water the CPR accidentally discovered the vast supply of natural gas which has supplied the city needs since 1903. “Hell’s Basement”, a nickname coined by Rudyard Kipling in 1907. Intrigued by the town’s name, Rudyard Kipling the famous English writer and poet, chose to stop in Medicine Hat during a trip across Canada in 1907. The locals gave him a celebrity tour during which they tried to impress him of the vast underground stores of natural gas. The story is that they turned on a gas pipe to full blast, threw a match to it and stood back One of Medicine Hat’s colorful murals as the roaring flame shot several hundred feet in the air. It would seem they were successful as Kipling was inspired to write: “This part of the country seems to have all hell for a basement, and the only trap door appears to be in Medicine Hat” .

Located at the Medalta Potteries National Historic Site (thought to be the oldest industrial site in Alberta - brick manufacturing started in 1886). In the early days locals discovered clay ideal for manufacturing brick and ceramics in the banks of the river. Combined with the abundance of natural gas to fuel pottery kilns, Medicine Hat became a major supplier of clay products. Medicine Hat Brick & Tile, now known as I-XL Masonry Supplies Ltd, continues to grow and expand in Western Canada. The museum experience takes you through the old factory floors with the stories of the industrial history. You will see the contemporary galleries where creations from local, regional, and international artists are displayed. There is also a gift shop where you can purchase items made by skilled artisans and fired with natural gas flowing from beneath the facility.

  7. Medicine Hat Region -Other Places To Visit Red Rock Coulee Alberta Natural Area The round boulders are concretions, formed millions of years ago when sand, calcite and iron oxide combined to form these spherical shapes. The resulting concretions were harder than the surrounding material, so when erosion carved the coulee, the softer material washed away, leaving the red rocks exposed. This coulee is eerily different then most because of the consistent shape of the boulders, their large sizes and brilliant color. They are among the biggest ever found and among the most flashy. A little over a half-hour drive from Medicine Hat. Head SW of the city on Highway #3 to Seven Persons, then travel south on Highway 887 for about 26 km to where the highway turns east. A sign near the curve directs you to a short access road to the site. Elkwater Approximately 35 minutes SE of Medicine Hat, Elkwater (in Cypress Hills Park) is a year-round recreational area, consisting of a golf course, a marina and 6 pristine lakes, all within 20 minutes of the townsite. The region boasts great fly-fishing and hiking. Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, the highest point in Canada between the Rockies and Labrador, is the first and only interprovincial park in Canada, and consists of 2,500 sq. km. of astonishing alpine environment with rich scenic vistas, plant and animal life. Elkwater and Banff townsites share the same elevation (4048ft above sea level). Dinosaur Provincial Park A UNESCO World Heritage Site 123 km NW of Medicine Hat (40 min drive N of Highway #1 at Tilley exit). In addition to its particularly beautiful scenery, located at the heart of Alberta's badlands, the park contains some of the most important fossil discoveries ever made from the 'Age of Reptiles', in particular about 35 species of dinosaur, dating back some 75 million years.
