EREN ¡Pilot ¡Project ¡Example ¡1 ¡ Effects ¡of ¡riparian ¡vegetation ¡on ¡stream ¡temperature ¡ Lead ¡Scientist: ¡Dr. ¡Jeff ¡Simmons, ¡ Mount ¡St. ¡Mary’s ¡University, ¡MD ¡ * 12 ¡participating ¡institutions ¡ * Objective: ¡To ¡quantify ¡the ¡extent ¡and ¡nature ¡of ¡change ¡ in ¡stream ¡temperature ¡regime ¡caused ¡by ¡vegetated ¡ riparian ¡zones ¡over ¡a ¡wide ¡geographic ¡range. ¡ * Data ¡collection ¡began ¡June ¡1, ¡2011 ¡with ¡data-­‑loggers ¡ installed ¡in ¡vegetated ¡and ¡unvegetated ¡stream ¡reaches ¡ at ¡each ¡site. ¡ * Student ¡engagement: ¡Under ¡development ¡– ¡a ¡possible ¡ direction ¡is ¡to ¡use ¡this ¡dataset ¡for ¡analysis ¡exercises ¡ exploring ¡continental-­‑scale ¡drivers ¡of ¡ecological ¡ processes. ¡

EREN ¡Pilot ¡Project ¡Example ¡2 ¡ Permanent ¡Forest ¡Plot ¡Project ¡ Lead ¡Scientists: ¡Dr. ¡Erin ¡Lindquist, ¡Meredith ¡College, ¡NC ¡and ¡ ¡ Dr. ¡Karen ¡Kuers, ¡The ¡University ¡of ¡the ¡South, ¡TN ¡ * 15 ¡participating ¡institutions ¡ * Objective: ¡ ¡Students ¡will ¡monitor ¡forest ¡tree ¡growth ¡in ¡a ¡network ¡of ¡ 20 ¡x ¡20 ¡m ¡permanent ¡plots ¡and ¡will ¡address ¡questions ¡related ¡to ¡tree ¡ biomass, ¡invasive ¡species, ¡and ¡disturbance ¡across ¡regions. ¡ ¡Data ¡is ¡ stored ¡in ¡a ¡shared, ¡online ¡database. ¡ * Plot ¡establishment ¡began ¡in ¡August, ¡2011 ¡and ¡some ¡data ¡has ¡been ¡ uploaded ¡to ¡the ¡online ¡database ¡to ¡test ¡it. ¡ ¡The ¡database ¡will ¡be ¡ officially ¡opened ¡to ¡All ¡Members. ¡ * Student ¡engagement: ¡Students ¡collect ¡data ¡in ¡laboratory ¡exercises ¡ associated ¡with ¡their ¡classes. ¡ ¡Some ¡independent ¡research ¡students ¡ have ¡also ¡worked ¡on ¡the ¡plots. ¡
