Red River Route
Red River Facts • Named for the RED-BED Country (Sedimentary Rocks) of its watershed. There are Several Rivers with the same name. • It originates at elevation 3440’ in the Texas Panhandle and New Mexico. • It travels across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana where it discharges at Elevation 34’ into the Atchafalaya/Mississippi in West Feliciana Parish. • 1360 Miles long, 65,595 square miles drainage Basin, Average discharge Rate of 57 kcfs and Maximum Rate of 303 kcfs, April 7, 1945.
Caddo Levee District is charged with maintaining the integrity of 119.35 Miles of Levee and 250 Miles of Levee Drainage Systems that includes floodgates and one Storm Water Pumping Station.
The Levee and Drainage Systems Provide Flood Protection for approximately 200,000 Acres of Land and over 30,000 Residents (Most of the Residents are in the City of Shreveport).
The District‘s levee system consists of the following 5 Levee Segments and One Storm Water Pumping Station:
1) The Red River main levee (80.37 miles). Extends 51.52 miles from N. of the intersection of Cross Bayou and Red River to the hills at the Arkansas-Louisiana State line. The other 28.85 miles extend downstream from the Shreveport – Barksdale HWY to the Caddo-Red River Parish Line
2) The Twelve Mile Bayou Levee is 23.92 miles long and it extends from the Red River Levee at Twelve Mile Bayou Bend N. of Shreveport to high ground 9 miles above the mouth of Black Bayou, at the Gamm Road southwest of Gilliam.
3) The Black Bayou-Pine Island Levee is 7.01 miles long and it extends from approximately one mile northeast of Caddo Lake Dam to the high ground above the mouth of Black Bayou.
4) The West Agurs Levee is 5.02 Miles and it extends along Cross Bayou and Twelve Mile Bayou from the Red River Levee at Market St. and Cross Bayou in Shreveport to the Red River above Highway 1 Bridge
5) The Cherokee Park Levee begins at point on the Red River Levee Close to Grimmett Dr. and runs easterly for 1.53 miles to the high ground at the N. end of Shreveport Downtown Airport Runway.
6) The West Agurs Pumping Station Located approximately 500 feet East of Hearne Avenue Bridge over Twelve Mile Bayou on the Westside of West Agurs Levee
Pump Station Location
Drainage Structure Data • The gravity Outfall drainage structure is a 10’x10’ Reinforced Concrete Box Culvert. • Equipped with a Rodney-Hunt Vertical Lift Sluice Gate. • Inlet Elevation 143.38’ (18.1’ below Flood Stage) • Outlet Elevation 136.70’ (24.78’ below Flood Stage) • RCB is approximately 275
Pump Station • The Drainage Basin is approximately 1.595 Square Miles (1020 Acres). • Two 200 HP Vertical Turbine Electric Pumps (One was install in 1966 and the Other in 2004). • Inlet Intake Elevation 148’ • Outlet Discharge Elevation 158.23’ • Two 36” Discharge Pipes equipped with Siphon - Breaker Valves. • Pumping Capacity is 25,000 gpm.
